Meta Directs Metaverse Division to Achieve Fivefold Productivity Boost Through AI Adoption

TLDR: Meta’s Vice President of Metaverse, Vishal Shah, has issued a directive to the company’s Metaverse team, urging them to increase their productivity by five times through the extensive integration of artificial intelligence into their daily workflows. The initiative aims to make AI a fundamental habit, not a novelty, with a goal for 80% of the team to be using AI tools by the end of the year.

In a significant strategic shift, Meta Platforms is pushing its Metaverse division to dramatically enhance productivity by leveraging artificial intelligence. Vishal Shah, Meta’s Vice President of Metaverse, communicated this ambitious goal to employees in an internal message, emphasizing a ‘Think 5x, not 5 percent’ mindset. This directive, initially reported by 404 Media and corroborated by India Today and Mashable, underscores Meta’s commitment to embedding AI as a core component of its operational framework.

Shah’s message highlighted that the objective is to transform AI into a daily habit rather than a sporadic tool. ‘Our goal is simple yet audacious: make AI a habit, not a novelty. This means prioritising training and adoption for everyone, so that using AI becomes second nature, just like any other tool we rely on,’ Shah reportedly wrote. The internal communication was accompanied by a graphic visually reinforcing the fivefold productivity target.

This mandate extends beyond just engineers to include project managers and designers within the Metaverse team. They are encouraged to ‘roll up their sleeves and build prototypes, fix bugs, and push the boundaries of what’s possible’ using AI. The company aims for 80 percent of its Metaverse team members to be actively utilizing AI in their daily routines by the close of the year.

The move comes as Meta continues to navigate the evolving landscape of its Metaverse ambitions. Once hailed as CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s primary vision, leading to the company’s rebrand from Facebook in 2021, the Metaverse platform has faced challenges and significant investments, with Meta reportedly spending close to $50 billion on its virtual reality division. This new AI-centric approach seeks to revitalize the division and accelerate product development.

Meta has been actively investing in AI talent and capabilities. Earlier this year, the company made a $14.8 billion investment in Scale AI and brought on its CEO, Alexandr Wang, as a top executive. Additionally, Andrew Tulloch, a co-founder of Mira Murati’s AI research startup Thinking Machines Lab, recently joined Meta, further signaling the company’s aggressive pursuit of AI leadership. This aligns with Zuckerberg’s previously stated goal of having AI handle half of Meta’s coding by 2026, indicating a broader, company-wide integration of AI to drive efficiency and innovation.
