TLDR: Meta has acquired PlayAI, an Egyptian-founded voice AI startup, to enhance its generative AI capabilities, particularly in voice technology for AI characters, wearables, and audio content. The entire PlayAI team, co-founded by Mahmoud Felfel and Hammad Syed, will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.
Meta Platforms has announced the acquisition of PlayAI, a voice artificial intelligence startup co-founded by Egyptian engineers Mahmoud Felfel and Hammad Syed. This strategic move is part of Meta’s aggressive push to strengthen its generative AI capabilities and compete more effectively with other tech giants in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
PlayAI, which raised US$21 million in seed funding from investors including Kindred Ventures, 500 Global, Y Combinator, Race Capital, Soma Capital, and Pioneer Fund, specializes in creating human-like synthetic voices. The company’s flagship product, Play Dialog, is a multi-turn speech model trained on hundreds of millions of conversations, excelling in contextual understanding and nuanced emotional responses. They also developed Play 3.0 mini, a fast, lightweight, multilingual real-time text-to-speech model, alongside a no-code voice agent platform and real-time APIs. PlayAI initially began as a Chrome plugin that read articles aloud, evolving into a comprehensive voice AI platform that supports over 30 languages and enables rapid creation of voice agents for various applications like customer support, appointment scheduling, and sales.
The acquisition aligns with Meta’s roadmap across AI Characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation. An internal Meta memo, partially reprinted by Bloomberg, stated, “The PlayAI team’s work in creating natural voices, along with a platform for easy voice creation, is a great match for our work and road map.” The entire PlayAI team will integrate into Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, reporting directly to the company’s AI leadership, specifically under Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from Sesame AI to lead voice efforts.
This acquisition is a clear indication of Meta’s commitment to prioritizing AI this year, with significant investments in infrastructure such as chips and data centers, and a focus on recruiting top talent. Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly restructured the AI team, appointing Alexandr Wang from Scale AI to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs. The move also highlights Meta’s ‘acquihire’ strategy, where the company acquires startups primarily for their talent rather than just their technology. This approach is crucial for Meta, especially after its Llama 4 AI model, released in April 2025, was reportedly considered a flop, and the company experienced a significant outflow of top AI talent.

For PlayAI, what began as an effort to address limited access to voice content in regional markets evolved into a globally recognized real-time generative voice infrastructure company. Regina Zurutuza, Partner at 500 Global, an early investor in PlayAI, remarked, “What began as a local issue grew into a global voice infrastructure platform, rapidly built by two bold Egyptian entrepreneurs. Now, they’re becoming part of Meta’s Superintelligence Labs. This reflects the power of global vision.” The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed. This milestone underscores the growing potential of startups from the MENA tech ecosystem to achieve international scale.
