Meta has reportedly brought on board at least three more distinguished AI researchers from Google DeepMind: Tianhe Yu, Cosmo Du, and Weiyue Wang. These individuals were instrumental in developing a variant of Google’s Gemini model, which notably demonstrated gold-medal-level problem-solving abilities at this year’s International Math Olympiad. These recent additions bring the total number of former Google employees joining Meta’s burgeoning AI team to at least six. Meta is also establishing a dedicated ‘Meta Superintelligence Lab’ to consolidate its research efforts towards advanced AI and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). While reports circulated about Meta offering exorbitant signing bonuses, potentially up to $200 million, the company has denied these figures, stating they are exaggerated. Furthermore, Meta has reportedly recruited eight senior researchers from OpenAI within a single week in June, prompting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to remark, “It feels like someone broke into our house and stole our stuff.”
Microsoft, under the leadership of Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and now head of Microsoft’s consumer AI division, has also made substantial gains. The company has reportedly hired around two dozen (24) former DeepMind employees in recent months. Key acquisitions include Amar Subramanya, former head of engineering for Google’s Gemini chatbot, who has joined Microsoft as a Corporate Vice President of AI. Subramanya, who spent 16 years at Google, expressed his enthusiasm on LinkedIn, stating, “The culture here is refreshingly low ego yet bursting with ambition… It reminds me of the best parts of a startup: fast-moving, collaborative, and deeply focused on building truly innovative, state-of-the-art foundation models to drive delightful AI-powered products such as Microsoft Copilot.” He will contribute to Microsoft’s flagship AI products like Copilot and Bing. Other notable DeepMind alumni joining Microsoft include Sonal Gupta, former engineering lead, now a technical staff member on Suleyman’s team; Adam Sadovsky, a former software engineer and senior director at DeepMind with nearly 18 years at Google, now a Corporate VP at Microsoft AI; and Jonas Rothfuss, a former research scientist at DeepMind, now technical staff at Microsoft AI.

Data from Visa Workforce Insights Q1 2025 reveals that Microsoft offered salaries up to $284,000 for AI Software Engineers, with some LinkedIn positions reaching as high as $336,000 annually. This aggressive hiring is part of a proactive strategy to funnel investments into AI, even as some companies, like Microsoft, have undergone significant restructuring and layoffs in other divisions to reallocate resources towards their expanded AI ambitions.
