BOSTON, MA – The Massachusetts AI Hub, a groundbreaking initiative launched by Governor Maura Healey in December 2024, has officially commenced the distribution of funds for a range of applied artificial intelligence projects across the Commonwealth. This significant development marks a pivotal step in Massachusetts’ ambitious strategy to cement its position as a global leader in AI innovation.
Funded by a substantial $100 million investment authorized through the Mass Leads Act, the AI Hub was established to foster advanced AI research and development, enhance access to critical computing resources and datasets, and promote ethical AI applications that address real-world societal and industry challenges. The initiative brings together government, academia, and industry to drive transformative change.
Throughout early 2025, the AI Hub rolled out several key funding programs. In February 2025, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Innovation Institute announced the MA AI Models Innovation Challenge, allocating up to $2 million to support groundbreaking AI model development. These projects are specifically designed to tackle issues in crucial sectors of the Massachusetts economy, including advanced manufacturing, climatetech, education, financial services, healthcare, life sciences, and robotics.
Further bolstering its infrastructure, Governor Healey announced a $31 million state grant in May 2025. This funding is dedicated to expanding access to sustainable high-performance computing, leading to the creation of the Artificial Intelligence Compute Resources (AICR) environment at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC). This initiative is part of a broader $120 million joint investment over five years, providing essential computing power to universities, startups, and businesses statewide. During the same period, Sabrina Mansur, a former executive at Torc Robotics with over two decades of experience in AI and autonomous systems, was appointed as the inaugural executive director of the AI Hub.
Additionally, in March 2025, MassTech awarded a grant exceeding $1.9 million to Cambridge-based LabCentral and partner C10 Labs. This funding is earmarked for launching the first ‘Applied AI’ program specifically targeting artificial intelligence breakthroughs within the biotech sector. The Hub is also exploring a new partnership with IBM and Red Hat to create a startup accelerator program, further nurturing AI entrepreneurship.
