Amazon and Carnegie Mellon University Establish New AI Innovation Hub to Advance Frontier Research

TLDR: Amazon and Carnegie Mellon University have officially launched the CMU-Amazon AI Innovation Hub, a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating research in generative AI, robotics, natural language processing, and cloud computing. Amazon is providing substantial funding for research projects, doctoral fellowships, and community-building initiatives to foster innovation and translate breakthroughs into real-world solutions.

Pittsburgh, PA – October 15, 2025 – Amazon and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) today announced the establishment of the CMU-Amazon AI Innovation Hub, a significant collaboration designed to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence and related fields. This new hub reinforces a shared commitment to advancing cutting-edge research through robust academic-private sector partnerships.

The Innovation Hub will focus on critical areas including generative AI, robotics, natural language processing, and cloud computing technologies. Building upon existing collaborations between the two institutions, the initiative is set to accelerate innovation in both foundational and emerging technologies.

Amazon has committed substantial funding to support the Hub’s ambitious goals. This includes financial backing for joint research projects between CMU faculty and Amazon scientists, doctoral fellowships specifically targeting key technical challenges in AI, and various community-building initiatives. The aim is to create an ecosystem where groundbreaking research can be rapidly transformed into solutions that benefit society at large.

Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Agentic AI at Amazon Web Services, emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership. “The convergence of agentic AI, robotics, and natural-language processing represents an unprecedented opportunity to reshape how we live and work,” said Sivasubramanian. “By partnering with CMU, a recognized pioneer in these fields, we’re creating an ecosystem where breakthrough research can be rapidly transformed into solutions that benefit society at large.”

Theresa Mayer, CMU’s Vice President for Research, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the university’s philosophy. “At Carnegie Mellon, we believe that true innovation happens when discovery and application move hand in hand,” Mayer stated. “By bringing together our faculty and students with Amazon scientists, we will harness some of the most promising opportunities in AI, robotics, and cloud computing. This partnership embodies our strategy to strengthen collaboration across disciplines with industry — creating new pathways for innovation that benefit society and expand the frontiers of knowledge.”

The Hub’s initial research will leverage the strengths of both institutions in artificial intelligence and robotics, supported by Amazon’s global leadership in cloud computing and AI services. Projects will delve into challenges related to responsible AI development, advanced robotics systems, and next-generation cloud infrastructure, utilizing CMU’s renowned cross-campus interdisciplinary approach.
