Key AI Leadership Shifts at AWS Amid Intensified Talent Competition

TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has experienced several high-profile departures among its artificial intelligence leadership in 2025, including Vice President Karthik Ramakrishnan, who was involved in artificial general intelligence development, and generative AI leaders Vasi Philomin and Raj Aggarwal. These exits occur as Amazon significantly increases its AI investments and faces fierce competition for top talent in the rapidly evolving AI sector.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, has seen a series of significant executive departures within its artificial intelligence (AI) division throughout 2025, signaling a dynamic period for the company amidst an escalating global talent war in AI. These movements come as Amazon intensifies its investments in AI to maintain its competitive edge against rivals like OpenAI and Google.

One of the most recent high-profile exits is Karthik Ramakrishnan, a Vice President who played a crucial role in developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) at Amazon. Ramakrishnan, who spent 13 years with the tech giant, was notably part of the team responsible for creating the Alexa voice assistant and Echo devices. His departure was announced on September 26, 2025, though his next career move was not immediately disclosed. This exit is part of a broader trend of senior AI leaders leaving Amazon.

Earlier in the year, AWS also saw the departure of Vasi Philomin, who served as Vice President and General Manager of AWS machine learning and AI business, specifically overseeing generative AI projects. Philomin, credited with building Amazon Bedrock “from the ground up” into a premier platform for generative AI applications, left the company around late June 2025 after an eight-year tenure. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed his departure, stating he left for another company, and Rajesh Sheth, VP for Amazon Elastic Block Store, has assumed some of his responsibilities. Philomin was a frequent speaker at major AWS events like re:Invent and pioneered various generative AI and AI services including Amazon Q, Amazon Lex, and CodeWhisperer.

Another notable departure was Raj Aggarwal, the General Manager of generative AI and revenue acceleration at AWS. Aggarwal announced his exit around mid-March 2025, after nearly three years with the cloud computing unit, to launch a new startup. In a LinkedIn post, Aggarwal expressed pride in his team’s pioneering work in generative AI, stating, “I’m proud of the pioneering work our team did in generative AI from its earliest days.” He highlighted the development of large-scale generative AI products that were “launched to tens of thousands of sellers, used hundreds of thousands of times, driving a 4.9 percent increase in pipeline generation.” Aggarwal also advised major customers on their AI execution and served as a key design partner for Amazon’s AI product suite, including Bedrock, Q, and its foundation models.

These executive shifts underscore the intense competition for AI talent across the technology industry. Amazon has been aggressively bolstering its AI capabilities, including an estimated $8 billion investment in Anthropic, whose Claude model powers some Alexa features and an internal chatbot named Cedric. AWS Chief Matt Garman recently urged employees to accelerate product launches, emphasizing that delays could undermine Amazon’s competitive standing in AI services. Investors are keenly awaiting further details on Amazon’s AI strategy, expected in its upcoming third-quarter earnings report in late October.
