Key AWS Executives Depart, Including Leaders from Generative AI and Amazon Q Divisions

TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has seen the departure of eight significant executives, including vice presidents and top engineers. Notably, leaders from the generative AI group and Amazon Q Apps are among those who have left the $124 billion cloud giant. Some departing executives have transitioned to competitors like Snowflake, F5, and CoreWeave, raising questions amidst AWS’s continued market dominance and focus on AI.

CRN Magazine reported on August 13, 2025, a significant shake-up within Amazon Web Services (AWS) as eight key executives, including vice presidents and top engineers, have recently departed the cloud computing behemoth. These departures span critical divisions, including the burgeoning generative AI group and the Amazon Q Apps team, signaling notable changes within the company’s leadership.

Among the high-profile exits is Vasi Philomin, who served as VP and General Manager for AWS’ Generative AI division. Also departing is Krishna Srinivasan Iyer, the Head of Engineering for Amazon Q Apps, a service central to AWS’s AI strategy. Ashok Thirunarayanan, who led engineering for OpenSearch Serverless, Ingestion, and Security Analytics Services—services foundational to AWS’s generative AI and machine learning search platforms—has also left. Other notable departures include Christopher Niderman, Managing Director of AWS Industries and Solutions; Kevin Miller, VP of Global Data Centers; Nitin Bahadur, Head of Engineering for AWS Glue and Amazon AppFlow; and Arturo Villarreal, CFO for Latin America. Prathiban Mohanasundaram was also listed among the eight executives.

The exits come as AWS continues to assert its dominance in the global cloud market. In the second quarter of 2025, AWS reported robust financial performance, generating $30.9 billion in revenue, a 17 percent increase year-over-year, with an operating income of $10.2 billion. The company maintains its position as the global cloud market-share leader, holding 30 percent, ahead of Microsoft (20 percent) and Google Cloud (13 percent), according to Synergy Research Group data.
