TLDR: Travel booking platform Ixigo is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting its core focus from airfares to becoming an ‘AI-first travel company’. The company’s co-founder, Rajnish Kumar, detailed a three-pronged AI strategy encompassing efficiency, revenue generation through AI-powered products, and disruptive innovation. This strategic pivot is largely funded by the company’s IPO proceeds, and early results show substantial operational improvements and strong financial growth.
Ixigo, a prominent travel booking platform, is making a bold strategic pivot, transitioning from a traditional online travel agency (OTA) to an ‘AI-first travel company’. This significant shift, as articulated by co-founder Rajnish Kumar, underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence across its operations and product offerings. The move comes after the challenging period of the pandemic, during which Kumar recalled ‘staring at a blank dashboard’ with ‘absolutely zero bookings’, a crisis that ultimately spurred this transformative direction.
Kumar outlined a comprehensive three-pronged strategy centered on AI: enhancing efficiency, driving revenue, and fostering disruption. In terms of efficiency, Ixigo has already integrated generative AI into its internal systems to streamline various functions, including accelerating coding processes, optimizing HR workflows, improving finance reporting, and managing partner receivables. This internal application of AI aims to boost operational productivity across the board.
For revenue generation, AI is powering innovative products designed to address common consumer anxieties in travel. Examples include ‘Assured’ and ‘Price Lock’, which not only provide value to customers but also generate significant margins for the company. The focus on AI-driven solutions is expected to create new revenue streams and strengthen Ixigo’s market position.
Furthermore, Ixigo is dedicating resources to disruption, with a specialized team focused on ‘moonshot projects’. This forward-looking approach ensures that the company remains at the forefront of technological advancements and avoids being ‘blindsided by shifts in technology’. This commitment to continuous innovation is crucial for long-term growth in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Financially, the company is heavily investing its Initial Public Offering (IPO) proceeds into this AI-centric future. Kumar stated, ‘Most of the IPO proceeds we had allocated for would be consumed in this financial year. And most of it would be on AI.’ This substantial investment highlights the company’s confidence in AI as a core driver of its future growth.
The strategic shift is already yielding impressive results. Ixigo’s revenue for FY25 reached ₹914 crore, marking a 39% increase from ₹656 crore in the previous year. The platform now serves over half a billion unique users, representing nearly a third of India’s population, with a strong presence in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Kumar noted that consumers in these markets are increasingly exploring beyond domestic travel.

The impact of AI is also evident in customer interactions: ‘88% of our chats are completely closed by AI, 65% of our calls end-to-end are closed by AI, and the NPS of those interactions is better than human beings,’ Kumar revealed. This demonstrates not only efficiency gains but also an improved customer experience. Additionally, the company’s revenue per employee has reached an impressive $250,000 in the latest quarter, a figure that Kumar proudly compares to global tech leaders.
