At the heart of this transformation is the government’s proactive approach to integrating AI into policymaking and public administration. AI is revolutionizing decision-making processes, enabling data-driven policies through predictive analytics, and streamlining government services through automation. Initiatives like the Smart Cities Mission are leveraging AI to optimize urban infrastructure, making cities more efficient and livable. Furthermore, AI is bolstering cybersecurity efforts within governance, with AI-driven threat detection systems preventing cyberattacks and automated solutions identifying fraud in financial transactions. The integration of blockchain with AI is also enhancing secure data management.
Digital inclusion is another critical area where AI is making a profound impact. The government is utilizing AI to bridge the digital divide, particularly for rural and underserved populations. AI-powered voice assistants are facilitating vernacular language support, while digital literacy programs are employing AI-driven learning tools. New initiatives like the Kalaa Setu Challenge and Bhasha Setu challenge, launched by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, invite AI startups to develop scalable multilingual multimedia content solutions. AI-driven diagnostic systems are combining traditional methods like pulse reading with machine learning to improve accuracy and enable personalized preventive care. The Ayurgenomics initiative, a fusion of Ayurvedic principles and genomics, uses AI to identify disease markers and tailor health recommendations. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, highlighted that ‘The WHO brief showcases India’s AI-driven innovations, from predictive diagnostics using Prakriti-based machine learning to the groundbreaking Ayurgenomics project, which integrates Ayurveda with modern genomics. These efforts are preserving and validating our traditional knowledge while advancing its global integration.’
Economically, India’s AI sector is on a rapid growth trajectory. According to the UNCTAD Technology and Innovation Report 2025, India ranks 10th globally in AI investment, with a substantial US$1.4 billion. The country boasts a robust AI talent pool of 13 million, contributing significantly to open-source innovation. Projections indicate that India’s AI sector is anticipated to contribute approximately US$400 billion to the national economy by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28 percent. To support this growth, the central government approved INR 107.3 billion (US$1.24 billion) for AI-specific data center infrastructure in March 2024, signaling a shift towards AI-ready infrastructure. Indian enterprises are also seeing significant returns, with Microsoft reporting that Indian enterprises are gaining as much as 5x returns on their Generative AI investments, outperforming global averages.
Key government initiatives, such as the IndiaAI Mission, are fostering the development of foundational AI models. Local firms like Sarvam.AI have been selected to build the country’s first foundational model, demonstrating India’s ambition to play catch-up in the global AI race. As Ganesh Gopalan, founder and CEO of Gnani.ai, noted, ‘The number of experiments happening now is 100x,’ indicating a significant momentum in AI adoption among Indian enterprises. The emergence of agentic AI systems, where humans and machines co-pilot complex workflows, is expected to be another game-changer, driving double-digit productivity gains.
