Indian Telecom Sector Embraces AI for Intelligent Networks, Enhanced Connectivity, and Social Impact

The Indian telecommunications sector is undergoing a profound transformation, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerging as a pivotal force in redefining enterprise operations, connectivity, and social impact. Indian telcos are increasingly adopting AI-driven solutions to build intelligent networks, enhance service delivery, and personalize customer experiences, marking a significant shift towards an AI-native future.

According to recent reports, Indian businesses are making substantial strides in AI adoption, with 87 percent of surveyed companies having advanced their AI strategies in 2024, and a remarkable 76 percent already reporting positive returns on their investments. Looking ahead, 93 percent of respondents plan to increase their AI investments in 2025, indicating a strong commitment to this technological evolution.

AI’s integration is impacting various facets of the telecom industry. In network infrastructure, AI is bringing automation, intelligence, and efficiency to planning, optimization, and maintenance. Networks are expected to evolve towards autonomy, becoming self-healing and self-optimizing. AI algorithms are crucial for managing network traffic efficiently, identifying congestion points, and rerouting data to ensure smooth communication. They also enable automated planning, optimized resource allocation, and enhanced coverage.

Customer experience is another area seeing significant AI-driven improvements. AI enhances customer retention by providing tailored and responsive support, improving satisfaction, and reducing churn. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants offer 24/7 support, handling routine inquiries, troubleshooting, and account management.

The synergy between AI and next-generation connectivity, such as 5G and the upcoming 6G, is critical. 5G’s ultra-fast data transmission and low latency are essential for real-time AI applications, while 6G promises even higher data speeds and lower latency, vital for India’s technological advancement.

India’s commitment to AI in telecom is also evident through its active participation in global initiatives. In June 2025, India hosted the third meeting of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU-T) Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence Native for Telecommunication Networks (FG-AINN). Mr. Sanjeev Bidwai, Member (T), Digital Communications Commission, emphasized that AI-native networks represent a transformative approach to telecom infrastructure. He highlighted India’s initiatives, including the development of Bharat Gen, India’s first government-funded multimodal large language model for Indian languages, and ongoing projects by IITs and C-DOT focusing on AI-driven network automation and digital twin technology. Mr. Bidwai also stressed the need for ethical AI deployment, ensuring digital sovereignty, explainability, and robust regulatory frameworks.

Mr. Seizo Onoe, Director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Standardisation Bureau, underscored the transformative potential of AI-native networks to enable automation, self-management, and real-time optimization, which are essential for meeting future connectivity demands.

Government policies, including the Telecommunications Act 2023, National Digital Communications Policy 2018, and the National Broadband Mission, are fostering innovation and competition. The ‘Make AI in India and AI Work for India’ mission aims to drive innovation and build domestic capacities, ensuring India’s technological sovereignty.

Despite the rapid adoption, challenges remain. Key concerns include a lack of governance (53%), insufficient AI expertise (51%), difficulties in technology integration (51%), data management issues (41%), and struggles to generate business value (39%). To address these, companies are prioritizing investments in IT operations, software coding, and data quality management, while also leveraging open-source tools, managed cloud services, and specialized AI talent.
