MIT Explores AI and Machine Learning’s Transformative Role in Engineering Design

The institution offers a dedicated course, “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Engineering Design” (2.155/2.156), which delves into the practical applications of AI and ML in creating new products and addressing intricate engineering challenges.

Led by instructors like Professor Faez Ahmed, the course focuses on the implementation of advanced machine learning and optimization strategies. Students engage in term projects where they apply AI techniques to solve complex problems of their choosing, alongside hands-on exercises tailored to specific engineering issues such as robotics, aircraft design, structural engineering, and metamaterials. The curriculum also incorporates student-facilitated discussions on research papers, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the field.

Professor Ahmed, an expert in AI and design at MIT’s Mechanical Engineering department, emphasizes the role of AI as a “co-pilot” that assists human designers in creating better products faster and more efficiently. He highlights that AI can help in designing products that are more sustainable, affordable, high-quality, or compact. For instance, an AI model, having analyzed numerous car designs, could suggest modifications like sleeker profiles or reduced side mirror lengths to improve aerodynamics and speed.

The course is designed for engineering students with foundational knowledge in programming and machine learning, though familiarity with programming (like Python) is particularly recommended. It covers a wide array of topics, including data visualization, single and multi-objective design optimization, supervised and unsupervised learning methods, dimensionality reduction, neural networks (MLPs, Convolutional Neural Nets), self-supervised learning, and deep generative models like GANs and Diffusion Models.

Previous iterations of the course (offered as 2.s997 in Fall 2021 and Fall 2022) saw students undertake diverse projects, from medical device design to energy systems, utilizing cutting-edge methods such as generative adversarial networks and symbolic optimization. Students are encouraged to tailor their projects to personal or research interests, culminating in an end-of-semester poster presentation.

Professor Ahmed also addresses common misconceptions about AI, clarifying that it extends far beyond robotics and is present in everyday tools like autocomplete features and recommendation algorithms. He encourages aspiring AI designers, including younger students, to learn programming, particularly Python, as a foundational step. While acknowledging ethical concerns and ongoing philosophical discussions about AI developing consciousness, Professor Ahmed reassures that current AI systems are far from sentient, and humans remain in control of defining AI’s limits and roles in society.
