Indian Life Sciences Manufacturers Rapidly Adopting Smart Technologies, Rockwell Automation Survey Reveals

A new survey conducted by Rockwell Automation reveals a significant shift in the Indian life sciences manufacturing sector, with 95% of companies either actively using or evaluating smart manufacturing technologies. These advanced solutions include artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and digital twins, and are being adopted to combat pressing industry challenges such as escalating operational costs, growing cybersecurity threats, and persistent workforce shortages. The findings were released on Thursday, July 31, 2025, as part of Rockwell Automation’s 10th annual ‘State of Smart Manufacturing Report: Life Sciences Edition’.

The global study, which encompassed 143 industry leaders across 15 countries including India, highlights that smart manufacturing is becoming nearly universal in the life sciences sector. Companies are leveraging these technologies to enhance operational resilience and agility, especially in the face of evolving global tariff scenarios and supply chain disruptions.

Artificial intelligence stands out as a crucial area of investment. The report indicates that companies are primarily utilizing AI to improve product quality (53%), streamline operations (50%), and bolster cybersecurity (48%). Furthermore, nearly half of the respondents (48%) are deploying AI, alongside automation (46%), to mitigate the impact of skilled labor shortages. Dilip Sawhney, MD, Rockwell Automation India, emphasized the necessity of these technologies, stating, ‘The findings of this year’s report reaffirm that technologies like AI, digital twins, and smart manufacturing are no longer optional — they are essential to addressing talent shortages, regulatory compliance, supply chain constraints, and scaling with resilience and agility.’

Despite the widespread adoption of data collection, the survey also identified a gap in data utilization, with only 46% of manufacturers believing they are effectively using the large volumes of operational data they collect. The report underscores that the ability to convert this data into actionable insights will be pivotal for future decision-making and efficiency within the sector. Additionally, 36% of firms plan to invest in generative or causal AI, and 35% are exploring digital twin and simulation tools, indicating a forward-looking approach to digital transformation.
