Illumia Labs, a pioneering firm based in Canada, is making significant strides into the Asia-Pacific market, with a strategic focus on Taiwan. The company, co-founded by two former Singapore Air Force pilots, is set to introduce its innovative AI-powered Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) training solutions to the region. This initiative aims to establish a robust local presence and cultivate an advanced XR (Extended Reality) training ecosystem in Taiwan, directly addressing a critical global labor shortage.
Alan Tay, co-founder and CEO of Illumia Labs, elaborated on the company’s unique approach to immersive training, which leverages generative AI. In an interview with DIGITIMES, Tay also discussed their ambitious Series A funding plans and how they intend to capitalize on Taiwan’s strong technological infrastructure.
The inspiration behind Illumia Labs originated from a persistent real-world challenge observed by Tay while managing a flight school. A continuous scarcity of mechanics and flight instructors, dating back to 2015, severely hampered the school’s capacity to produce trained pilots within efficient timelines. This firsthand experience underscored the urgent need for scalable and effective training methodologies.
Illumia Labs differentiates itself from conventional VR/AR training methods by emphasizing human-centered AI. The core technology revolves around two key aspects:
1. Behavioral Replication: The AI is trained to meticulously copy the subtle actions, behaviors, and complex assessment methods of human instructors, utilizing extensive video data.
2. Dynamic, Individualized Immersive Training: This hands-on, contextual assessment provides a learning experience that is far more dynamic and personalized than traditional chatbot interactions. The system is also designed to handle multilingual and culturally sensitive training, making it adaptable to diverse global markets.
Tay noted that the product is designed to be approximately 80% complete upon deployment. He stated, “The other 20% I need the local experts to let us know what are the local customs. We can add on, and our AI learns from the video.” This final, customized portion is integrated into their business model through a one-time Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) fee, alongside standard SaaS licenses and seed models for larger organizations.

After successfully developing an initial Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in 2021, which focused on digitizing a flight instructor, Illumia Labs recognized the broader potential of its technology beyond aviation. The company is now expanding its applications across numerous vocations, aiming to digitize human expertise across various industries to enhance learning and development globally.
