Hitachi, Brookfield, and Hartree Forge Alliance for Green Digital Infrastructure in Japan

TLDR: Hitachi, Brookfield Japan, and Hartree Partners Singapore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore funding mechanisms for developing grid-scale storage batteries and large-scale digital infrastructure in Japan. This collaboration aims to address the escalating electricity demand from data centers, particularly those supporting generative AI and cloud services, while promoting sustainable economic growth through environmentally-friendly digital solutions and grid stabilization.

Tokyo, Japan – A significant strategic alliance has been formed to bolster Japan’s digital and energy sectors, with Hitachi, Ltd., Brookfield Japan Kabushiki Kaisha, and Hartree Partners Singapore Pte. Limited signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 17, 2025. The tripartite agreement focuses on jointly exploring funding schemes to meet the substantial capital needs for developing grid-scale storage batteries and large-scale digital infrastructure across Japan.

The initiative comes at a critical time when Japan, like many nations, faces the dual challenge of stabilizing its electricity supply amidst fluctuating renewable energy output and meeting the rapidly increasing power demands from advanced digital infrastructure. The proliferation of generative AI and cloud services has led to a global surge in electricity consumption by data centers and semiconductor factories, raising concerns about grid stability and sustainable power supply.

Under the MoU, each partner brings distinct strengths to the collaboration. Hitachi contributes its comprehensive engineering capabilities in designing, building, and operating infrastructure within both the energy and digital sectors, complemented by its Lumada expertise for accelerating digital innovation. Brookfield, a global investment firm and a major investor in AI infrastructure, leverages its extensive experience in investing in and operating large-scale infrastructure assets worldwide, including data centers. Hartree Partners, known for its strength in commodity trading, provides expertise in renewable project development and energy sector commodities, including electricity, LNG, and carbon.

Brookfield Japan CEO Luke Edwards emphasized the strategic importance of this endeavor, stating that nations dominating AI infrastructure, such as the data centers planned through this partnership, will hold a strategic advantage in the global economy and national security. The collaboration aims to build an ecosystem with a wide range of partners, promoting the use of decarbonization and digital technologies to realize environmentally-friendly digital infrastructure that supports sustainable economic growth.

The development of such advanced digital infrastructure requires substantial initial investment and strategic financing. This partnership seeks to address these financial needs by exploring optimal funding schemes. Moving forward, the companies will proceed with specific considerations for establishing a joint venture targeting business operations in the Japanese market. They also plan to invite diverse partners, including energy infrastructure providers, data center developers/operators, and equipment manufacturers, to collaboratively build this next-generation green digital infrastructure.
