TLDR: Google Photos has launched six new artificial intelligence features, significantly enhancing image editing, creation, and search capabilities. These updates, driven by the advanced Nano Banana AI model, include personalized photo edits, expanded conversational editing for iOS, AI templates, and a global rollout of the ‘Ask Photos’ feature.
Google Photos is revolutionizing its platform with the introduction of six powerful new artificial intelligence features, marking a significant leap in user interaction with their photo libraries. The updates, which began rolling out on November 11, 2025, are largely powered by Nano Banana, Google’s most advanced image editing model, which is an integral part of the Gemini AI family.
Among the most anticipated additions is Personalized Photo Editing, allowing users to make highly specific adjustments to portraits and group shots using natural language commands. For instance, users can now type requests such as ‘Remove Riley’s sunglasses, open my eyes, make Engel smile and open her eyes.’ The AI leverages existing face recognition data from users’ private face groups to generate accurate, person-specific edits. This capability is also expanding to iOS users in the United States.
Further enhancing the editing experience, Google Photos is integrating Nano Banana into its ‘Help me edit’ tool for Restyling Images. Users can now transform their photos with open-ended requests, asking the AI to ‘paint you as a Renaissance portrait,’ ‘restyle an image as a mosaic made of colorful tiles,’ or ‘turn your photo into a page from a children’s storybook.’ Yael Marzan, Senior Director of Product Management for Google Photos, expressed enthusiasm, stating, ‘It’s inspiring to see all the creative ways you’re using Nano Banana.’
To assist users who might find generative AI prompting daunting, a new ‘Create with AI’ section is being introduced. This feature will offer ready-made AI templates based on popular requests, such as ‘put me in a high fashion photoshoot,’ ‘create a professional headshot,’ or ‘put me in a winter holiday card.’ This will initially roll out to Android users in the U.S. and India, with personalized templates tailored to individual hobbies and experiences expected in the coming weeks.
Google is also significantly expanding its ‘Ask Photos’ feature, a natural language search tool that allows users to find specific photos and information by simply asking questions. This powerful tool is now rolling out to over 100 new countries and regions and will support 17 new languages, making it accessible to a global audience. Complementing this, a new ‘Ask’ button is being introduced, allowing users to instantly start a conversation about an image to get details about its content, find similar pictures, or describe desired edits. This ‘Ask’ button is rolling out to both Android and iOS platforms in the U.S.
