Generative AI Drives Substantial Growth in October E-commerce Sales, Adobe Analytics Reveals

TLDR: U.S. e-commerce sales surged by 8.2% year-over-year in October 2025, reaching $88.7 billion, largely propelled by a significant increase in traffic from generative AI sources. This AI-driven traffic demonstrated higher conversion rates and increased shopper engagement, signaling a pivotal shift in online retail dynamics.

U.S. online retail experienced robust growth in October 2025, with consumer spending climbing 8.2% year-over-year to an impressive $88.7 billion, according to the latest data from Adobe Analytics. A key factor in this surge was the escalating influence of generative artificial intelligence, which not only drove traffic but also enhanced shopper behavior.

Traffic originating from generative AI sources saw an extraordinary 1,200% increase compared to the previous year. More significantly, once these AI-driven consumers landed on a retail site, they were 16% more likely to convert into a purchase. This marks a continued trend, as AI traffic also showed higher conversion in September. Furthermore, these shoppers exhibited greater engagement, being 13.6% more engaged than those from non-AI sources, exploring more content, and displaying a 31% lower bounce rate. This indicates that AI tools are empowering shoppers to become more informed and efficient in identifying relevant retailers for their needs.

Mobile shopping continued to dominate, accounting for 51.4% of online spend, an 11.6% increase year-over-year. The ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ option also contributed significantly, driving $7.1 billion in spending, up 7.6%, as consumers sought greater financial flexibility. The Amazon Prime Day event on October 7-8 provided a substantial boost, with consumers spending a total of $9.1 billion online across those two days, fueled by competitive discounts that peaked at 18% off listed prices.

Several product categories saw remarkable growth. Holiday décor sales soared by 130%, while items for home improvement also performed strongly, with hand tools up 83% and power tools up 62%. Major appliances like refrigerators and freezers saw a 55% increase. Other high-growth categories included e-readers (up 81%), headphones and speakers (up 52%), phone accessories (up 51%), and video games (up 41%).

Industry experts are recognizing the transformative role of AI in retail. Sophie Neary, MD of retail and consumer goods at Google, noted, “Search isn’t about keywords anymore. With AI tools, the AI will find those keywords for you. But even more importantly than that, it will understand the intent behind a search question.” Linda Ellett, KPMG UK head of consumer, retail and leisure, added that KPMG’s research shows “AI will play a growing role in how consumers search for and find promotional offers or gifts. This tech evolution presents both challenges and benefits to retailers trying to capture these tech savvy shoppers.” Retailers are now advised to prepare for this growing number of AI-related queries and consider auditing what AI tools know about their brands.
