TLDR: GitHub has announced the winners of its “For the Love of Code” challenge, a hackathon that encouraged developers to create joyful, ridiculous, and wildly creative projects. Over 300 participants submitted entries ranging from karaoke terminals to AI-powered résumés, with many leveraging AI tools like GitHub Copilot. The challenge highlighted the fun side of coding across six diverse categories, including a dedicated “Agents of Change” category for AI and automation projects.
GitHub recently unveiled the imaginative winners of its inaugural “For the Love of Code” challenge, a summer hackathon designed to celebrate the pure joy and creativity in software development. The competition, which ran from July 16, 2025, to September 22, 2025, saw over 300 developers participate, showcasing projects built purely for fun, without the pressure of startups or commercial viability. Lee Reilly, writing for The GitHub Blog on October 22, 2025, highlighted the diverse and whimsical nature of the submissions.
The hackathon encouraged participants to explore their “what if?” ideas, resulting in a wide array of projects. Some developers utilized GitHub Copilot to assist with refactoring, bug fixing, and generating new ideas, demonstrating the growing integration of AI in the development workflow. Entries spanned a broad spectrum of creativity, including a Breakout game powered by a GitHub graph, a unique laugh-track that activates on every commit, a Yelp-style code reviewer integrated into VS Code, a visually interactive Copilot, and even a comic strip generated from release notes.
The “For the Love of Code” challenge featured six distinct categories: “Buttons, beeps & blinkenlights” for hardware hacks; “Terminal talent” for command-line creations; “World wide wonders” for browser-based experiments; “Agents of change” for AI, bots, and automation; “Game on” for various games; and “Everything but the kitchen sink” as a wildcard category. The inclusion of “Agents of change” directly underscores the event’s connection to artificial intelligence, with many projects demonstrating innovative uses of AI and automation.
