Georgetown University has announced the establishment of its Academic Innovation Network (AIN), a strategic initiative designed to propel the institution’s engagement with rapidly evolving technological and societal landscapes, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. The AIN is envisioned as a collaborative platform that will integrate research, curriculum design, and program development, building upon the university’s two decades of academic innovation through the Red House and the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS).
Randy Bass, Vice President for Strategic Education Initiatives at Georgetown University, confirmed the launch, stating that the AIN ‘continues 25 years of academic innovation by the Red House and the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS).’ He further elaborated that the network’s creation integrates the Red House’s ‘edge’ innovation work into Georgetown’s core practices, enabling the university to respond with greater agility to contemporary challenges.
A pivotal aspect of this launch is the appointment of Dewey Murdick as a Senior Fellow within the Red House and AIN. Murdick, formerly the Director of Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), brings extensive expertise in artificial intelligence policy, emerging technology foresight, data science, and machine learning application development. His distinguished career also includes roles as Director of Science Analytics at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Deputy Chief Scientist at the Department of Homeland Security, and program manager at the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA).
In his new capacity, Murdick will lead research and incubation efforts specifically focused on human-AI interaction and human potential. Bass highlighted Murdick’s ‘deeply humane and evidence-based approach to human-AI interaction,’ which, combined with the pedagogical leadership of CNDLS and the Red House’s focus on ‘rehumanization,’ positions Georgetown to effectively address the challenges of the current era.
Murdick shared his vision for AI’s transformative potential in education during a Georgetown University interview. He articulated, ‘AI presents opportunities to reshape both learning and teaching by transforming how students and professors interact with knowledge and each other.’ He believes that AI can empower students to ‘perform at dramatically higher capability levels,’ shifting the learning paradigm from a linear skills ladder to a complex framework where human skills and AI capabilities are interwoven. This, he suggests, will allow students to ‘engage with complex problems earlier, using AI to synthesize information while focusing cognitive energy on higher-order thinking: creative synthesis, ethical reasoning, and navigating ambiguity.’
Furthermore, Murdick anticipates a shift in the professor’s role, moving from content delivery to ‘cognitive facilitation and knowledge contextualization.’ He envisions professors leveraging AI to identify knowledge gaps, create personalized learning pathways, and develop sophisticated assessments that differentiate between tool proficiency and genuine understanding. This would enable educators to concentrate more on mentoring human development and modeling effective human-AI collaboration.
Murdick emphasized an ‘evidence-driven approach’ to his work, drawing from his experience at CSET. He maintains a balanced perspective on AI, acknowledging both its ‘tremendous opportunities and genuine risks.’ His focus will be on developing AI systems that ‘preserve flow states and foster human connection’ while designing educational challenges that demand distinctly human capabilities such as judgment, creativity, and interdisciplinary thinking. He also stressed the importance of new assessment methods to distinguish genuine understanding from mere tool proficiency.

He stated, ‘As we explore AI integration, we’re not just asking, ‘Can we do this?’ but ‘Should we do this, and how do we ensure it serves human flourishing?” The university’s commitment to justice and expanding access to quality education, combined with the Jesuit tradition of rigorous inquiry and ethical reflection, will underpin the AIN’s experimental approach, ensuring that technology serves humanity.
