Duke University Enhances AI Suite with GPT-5 Integration into DukeGPT

TLDR: Duke University has significantly upgraded its institutional AI platform, DukeGPT, by integrating OpenAI’s most advanced model, GPT-5. This enhancement provides users with superior capabilities for writing, research, analysis, coding, and problem-solving, reinforcing Duke’s commitment to secure and cutting-edge AI resources for its academic community.

Duke University has announced a major advancement in its artificial intelligence offerings with the default integration of OpenAI’s GPT-5 model into its secure, university-managed AI platform, DukeGPT. This update, effective as of August 18, 2025, positions DukeGPT at the forefront of academic AI tools, providing students, faculty, and staff with access to OpenAI’s most sophisticated AI for a wide range of applications.

GPT-5 brings powerful new capabilities designed to support teaching, learning, and research across the university. Users can now leverage its enhanced features for writing, in-depth research, complex analysis, efficient coding, and advanced problem-solving. The model boasts deeper reasoning, allowing it to ‘think harder when needed’ and proactively ask relevant follow-up questions to keep projects moving forward.

Key improvements with GPT-5 include smarter and more capable performance, excelling in various academic and professional tasks with built-in advanced reasoning. It also offers more reliable responses, delivering faster and accurate outputs with richer citations and a professional tone. Furthermore, GPT-5 introduces ‘Proactive Collaboration,’ identifying missing context, suggesting next steps, and recommending useful output formats such as PDFs, one-pagers, emails, and reports.

An innovative ‘Autoswitcher’ feature ensures that users are automatically routed to the best model for their query, guaranteeing optimal answers every time. Advanced users have the option to access GPT-5’s flagship capabilities and a high-reasoning mode, ‘Thinking,’ which triggers automatically when appropriate or can be manually selected. Premium users can also manually activate ‘GPT-5-Pro’ for even greater reasoning power.

DukeGPT, initially made available in early June 2025, was developed to provide a secure, university-managed platform for exploring and comparing advanced AI models. It combines on-premise open-source options with cloud-based foundation models, ensuring maximum privacy and robust data protection. The platform is tailored to offer Duke-specific models and tools, integrated with Duke data and best practices, though it does not handle protected health information.

This initiative is part of a broader effort led by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and the Provost’s Office to deliver a comprehensive suite of Duke-managed AI tools. As Provost Alec D. Gallimore stated earlier, ‘Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are transforming higher education — enhancing creativity, improving efficiency, and accelerating discovery. By making these tools widely available under a secure, Duke-managed license, the university aims to ensure equitable access while upholding institutional data privacy standards.’

In addition to DukeGPT, the university launched a pilot program in early June, providing free, secure access to ChatGPT-4o for all undergraduate students. The AI Gateway for Developers is also being rolled out, offering API access to AI models through LiteLLM, enabling developers to integrate AI into their own applications with a cost-recovery model.
