Equinox Explores Generative AI for Tailored Fitness and Nutrition Guidance

TLDR: Luxury fitness brand Equinox is piloting a generative AI tool within its mobile app to offer personalized workout and nutrition recommendations to members. The system, currently in testing with employees, leverages proprietary training data and a detailed feedback loop to refine advice, aiming to enhance personalization and member engagement. This initiative aligns with Equinox’s broader strategy of integrating AI for productivity and improved member experience.

Equinox, the renowned luxury fitness operator, is currently conducting a pilot program for a generative artificial intelligence tool designed to provide highly personalized workout and nutrition advice to its members. This innovative step, as confirmed by Eswar Veluri, Equinox’s Chief Technology Officer, underscores the company’s strategic focus on harnessing AI to boost productivity and deliver bespoke experiences.

The AI-powered feature is integrated directly into the Equinox-branded mobile application. Initially, the pilot is being rolled out to employees, beginning with the technology team, with plans for potential wider expansion to all members. Veluri emphasized that a key differentiator of this system is its foundation on Equinox’s proprietary training data, which allows for a level of personalization that sets it apart from more generic AI-generated recommendations.

A crucial aspect of the pilot is its sophisticated feedback mechanism. Unlike older systems that relied on simplistic ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ inputs, this new tool incorporates a detailed written feedback loop. Users can provide comprehensive input, which is then processed by large language models to continuously refine and improve future recommendations. Veluri highlighted that this interactive approach significantly enhances user agency and personalization, aligning with Equinox’s premium fitness experience.

Equinox has a history of integrating AI into its operations. Previous implementations include AI-driven class recommendations based on member preferences and behavioral patterns, which have reportedly led to increased class bookings and reduced member attrition. More recently, the company launched an AI chatbot to handle routine inquiries such as gym hours, further streamlining member convenience.

Veluri noted that Equinox’s technology team, comprising approximately 80 members, is tasked with balancing innovation with fiscal responsibility. The company has also forged a close partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), which assisted in rearchitecting Equinox’s tech stack for improved efficiency. While AWS hosts much of the infrastructure, Equinox utilizes large language models from multiple providers to power its AI initiatives.
