TLDR: Major Hollywood studios, including Disney and Netflix, are discreetly adopting generative AI tools from startup Runway AI to streamline production and reduce costs, sparking both interest from other studios and ongoing industry debate over AI’s impact on creative roles.
In a significant shift within the entertainment industry, both Netflix and The Walt Disney Company are reportedly engaging with generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools developed by the New York-based startup, Runway AI. This quiet adoption signals a growing, albeit cautious, embrace of AI technologies across Hollywood, driven by the promise of substantial time and cost efficiencies in content production.
Netflix has already begun integrating Runway AI’s software into its content production workflows, primarily to accelerate and economize the creation of special effects. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos openly confirmed the company’s use of AI during a recent earnings call, revealing that generative AI was utilized for a visual effects (VFX) sequence in their original dystopian drama, ‘The Eternaut.’ While the specific AI software was not initially disclosed, sources have since confirmed it was indeed Runway AI’s technology.
Similarly, The Walt Disney Company has been testing Runway AI’s tools and has engaged in exploratory discussions with the startup regarding potential broader deployment in its movies and TV shows. However, a Disney spokesperson has emphasized that while the company is ‘monitoring innovations in generative AI,’ it currently has ‘no immediate plans’ to fully integrate Runway’s tools into its official production pipelines.
Beyond these two industry titans, other major players are also circling the controversial technology. Lionsgate and AMC Networks have reportedly inked deals with Runway AI, indicating a broader trend of studios experimenting with AI to enhance their production capabilities. Runway AI itself gained prominence in early 2023 with its three-second AI-generated clip generator and has since forged partnerships to train bespoke models on studio content.

The increasing adoption of generative AI, however, is not without its controversies. The technology has stirred significant debate across Hollywood, particularly highlighted during the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes. A key focus of these strikes was the establishment of safeguards to protect the livelihoods and creative integrity of VFX artists and animators, whose roles could be significantly impacted by AI automation. Despite these concerns, the allure of time and cost savings continues to draw studios towards these innovative, yet disruptive, tools.
