This newfound prominence comes despite many of these innovations having been under development for several years, as noted by Phil Lindemann, Epic’s VP of data and analytics. Lindemann remarked, ‘We’ve been working on this stuff for several years, and then for some reason, it just caught hold on the media.’ He also highlighted that Epic had demonstrated an AI agent at a previous conference, but ‘I don’t think the world even knew what an agent was at that time.’
At its annual conference in August, Epic unveiled approximately 200 different AI features currently in development. Among the notable introductions were ‘Art,’ an AI scribe designed to assist clinicians with documentation; ‘Emmie,’ a patient-facing chatbot aimed at enhancing patient engagement; and ‘Penny,’ a revenue management assistant to streamline financial operations.
Epic’s strategic integration of AI directly into its widely adopted EHR system presents a formidable challenge to health tech startups. By embedding these advanced tools within their core software, Epic offers similar functionalities directly to its extensive client base of health systems, potentially reducing the need for third-party vendors.
Lindemann explained that generative AI has accelerated many of Epic’s existing efforts, particularly in areas like risk prediction and other established applications of AI. The company’s approach involves creating more direct interfaces for providers and staff to interact with these AI capabilities, giving them distinct names for easier recognition and adoption. A key advantage for Epic’s clients is that these AI-powered functions are delivered through regular software updates, eliminating the need to purchase separate products. Lindemann stated, ‘The updates come in there, and those AI updates are coming along with it, so you see a much more rapid adoption than you would have even a few years ago.’
Epic’s AI initiatives are primarily focused on administrative tasks, such as automating the generation of denial letters and identifying anomalies in X-rays to prompt follow-up reminders. The company is deliberately avoiding AI applications that would involve automatic medication ordering or other scenarios where a computer might directly consult instead of a physician, emphasizing a supportive role for AI rather than a replacement for clinical judgment.

Earlier in May 2025, Epic’s XGM (Expert Group Meeting) conference also heavily emphasized AI and user experience, showcasing deep integration of generative AI into clinical workflows. Tools demonstrated included those for reorganizing text for readability, generating patient-friendly summaries, discharge instructions, and translating medical shorthand into plain language. The company’s long-term strategy clearly positions generative AI as an integral, almost invisible, part of the EHR system itself.
