TLDR: Accenture reported stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings for fiscal year 2024, driven by a significant increase in generative AI (Gen AI) bookings. The company secured $1 billion in Gen AI bookings in Q4, contributing to a total of $3 billion for the full fiscal year. This growth highlights the rising interest in Gen AI despite a cautious macroeconomic environment, with Accenture planning to expand its data and AI workforce to 80,000 by the end of fiscal 2026.
Accenture Plc, a global professional services company, has announced robust financial results for its fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2024, largely propelled by a surge in generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) deployments. The company secured an impressive $1 billion in Gen AI bookings during the quarter ending August, bringing the total Gen AI-related bookings for the full fiscal year to $3 billion. This marks a substantial increase from the $100 million in revenue reported from Gen AI in the previous fiscal year, with total revenue from Gen AI deployments reaching nearly $900 million for FY24.
Accenture’s overall new bookings for the full fiscal year amounted to $81 billion, a 12.5% increase year-on-year, with Gen AI projects accounting for 4% of this total. The company also reported overall Q4 FY24 revenues of $16.4 billion, a 3% increase compared to the same quarter last year. For the entire fiscal year 2024, Accenture’s revenues reached $64.9 billion, up 1% from the prior fiscal year.
Julie Sweet, Chair and CEO of Accenture, emphasized the transformative potential of Gen AI, stating, “We continue to accelerate our leadership in Generative AI, which we believe is the most transformative technology of the next decade, delivering $3bn in new bookings for the year.” She further noted that the company’s strategy to lead reinvention for clients and continued investments have positioned Accenture for strong growth in fiscal 2025.
Accenture is actively expanding its capabilities in this domain, with its data and AI team currently at 57,000 practitioners, and plans to grow this to 80,000 by the end of fiscal 2026. The company is leveraging Gen AI to automate manual tasks, enhance the software development lifecycle, and improve customer experience, allowing employees to focus on strategic initiatives.
Despite the strong performance in Gen AI, the broader economic outlook remains cautious. Accenture’s forecast for annual revenue growth for the year ending August 2025 is a modest 3-6%, reflecting ongoing economic headwinds and a conservative stance. Analysts, including Keith Bachman of BMO Capital Markets, suggest that while the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut might inspire optimism, clients are more likely to reprioritize existing budgets for Gen AI rather than increase overall IT spending. Sweet confirmed this sentiment, indicating that CEOs are not signaling a significant increase in discretionary spending.
