Elon Musk Intensifies AI Bias Debate with Sharp Criticism of OpenAI and Rivals

TLDR: Elon Musk has launched a strong critique against leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and MidJourney, accusing their large language models of exhibiting significant biases, particularly against white individuals and men. He championed his own AI, Grok, as a more equitable alternative, citing a February 2025 study on AI value systems.

In a recent and provocative series of statements, tech mogul Elon Musk has reignited the contentious debate surrounding artificial intelligence bias, directing his sharpest criticisms at prominent AI developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and MidJourney. On October 24, 2025, Musk took to his social media platform X to mock the names of these companies, asserting that ‘any given AI company will be the opposite of its name: OpenAI is closed, Stability is unstable, MidJourney isn’t mid, Anthropic is misanthropic.’ He further escalated his critique by labeling Anthropic’s Claude, a series of large language models (LLMs), as ‘pure evil.’

Musk’s allegations are rooted in concerns over what he perceives as inherent biases within these AI models. His comments were made in response to an X user, ‘arctotherium,’ who claimed that ‘almost all large language models view white people as far less valuable than other racial groups.’ The user also noted that ‘some models view South Asians as more valuable than other nonwhites, others are more egalitarian across nonwhites.’

Further substantiating these claims, the X user referenced a February 2025 study published by the Center for AI Safety. This study allegedly demonstrated that OpenAI’s GPT-4o model valued Nigerians approximately 20 times more highly than Americans. Similar patterns were observed in Claude Sonnet 4.5, where Nigerians were reportedly valued 27 times more than Germans. The critique extended to gender bias, with the user stating, ‘Almost all models view men as much less valuable than women, though whether women or non-binaries are more highly valued varies by model.’

In stark contrast to his rivals, Musk lauded his own AI platform, Grok, developed by xAI. The X user’s post specifically praised ‘Grok 4 Fast’ as ‘the only model I found that was actually ~egalitarian over race, sex, and immigration status (not viewing whites, men, Americans/ICE agents as less valuable).’ The user expressed surprise and admiration, suggesting the egalitarian nature was intentional, and offered ‘Kudos to Musk and xAI.’

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI executives and researchers, finds itself a particular target of Musk’s ire. Stability AI, a UK-based company known for its Stable Diffusion text-to-image model, and MidJourney AI, recognized for generating high-quality artistic images, were also swept into Musk’s broad condemnation.

Musk’s vocal critiques underscore his long-standing advocacy for transparency and fairness in AI development. He consistently promotes Grok as the ‘most authentic and advanced platform,’ emphasizing the need for AI systems to serve all demographics equally, free from prejudice. These statements are expected to intensify competitive dynamics within the AI sector, potentially pressuring companies to re-evaluate their ethical standards and frameworks in response to growing public and industry scrutiny.
