Databricks Unveils Lakebase: A New Era for Operational Databases Fueled by Neon Acquisition

Databricks, a leader in data and AI, has significantly advanced its ‘Lakebase’ database vision with the official launch of Lakebase, a groundbreaking serverless PostgreSQL database. This new offering is a direct result of Databricks’ strategic acquisition of Neon Inc., a startup specializing in serverless PostgreSQL, reportedly for approximately $1 billion. The announcement, made during the Data + AI Summit in San Francisco, marks Databricks’ bold entry into the operational database market, a sector valued at over $100 billion.

Lakebase is engineered to serve as a high-performance, low-latency transactional database (OLTP) that seamlessly integrates with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. It boasts a cloud-native architecture with separated compute and storage, enabling independent scaling and delivering impressive performance metrics, including sub-10ms latency and over 10,000 queries per second (QPS). This design addresses the historical challenge of managing disparate operational and analytical environments, providing a unified platform for data, analytics, and AI.

Crucially, Lakebase is built with artificial intelligence at its core. It supports open-source extensions like pgvector, which allows developers to store and manage vector embeddings—the data structures fundamental to AI models. This capability positions Lakebase as an ideal solution for building AI-powered applications, real-time machine learning feature lookups, and intelligent agents. Databricks executives, including CEO Ali Ghodsi and Co-founder and Chief Architect Reynold Xin, emphasized that Lakebase represents the future of databases, predicting that other transactional databases will evolve towards this architecture.

Integration with Databricks’ existing ecosystem is a key highlight. Lakebase works in conjunction with Unity Catalog for unified data governance, allowing administrators to manage access controls and monitor data usage across both lakehouse tables and Lakebase records. The platform also offers flexible data synchronization options between lakehouse tables and Lakebase, including one-off, automatic, and continuous syncing. Furthermore, it’s integrated with Databricks Apps for streamlined application development.

Currently in public preview, Lakebase is already being utilized by approximately 300 Databricks customers. The company’s vision is to disrupt the ‘sticky’ legacy database market, where vendors often lack innovation due to customer lock-in. By offering a flexible, scalable, and AI-ready operational database, Databricks aims to empower enterprises to infuse AI into their operational applications, from CRM and ERP to human capital management, thereby accelerating digital transformation and real-time decision-making.
