The partnership, initially announced in late July and early August 2024, aims to leverage Microsoft’s cutting-edge AI solutions to drive operational efficiency, improve consumer engagement, and enhance data analysis capabilities across all functions.
At the heart of this initiative is the establishment of a ‘Danone Microsoft AI Academy.’ This academy is designed to upskill and reskill approximately 100,000 Danone employees, equipping them with the necessary AI and digital tools to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven economy. This builds upon Danone’s existing ‘DanSkills’ program, which focuses on preparing its workforce for future job roles. Currently, 50,000 Danone employees are already utilizing AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot in their daily tasks.
Juergen Esser, Danone’s Deputy CEO in charge of Finance, Technology, and Data, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration. ‘Our collaboration with Microsoft will accelerate our AI transformation, providing us with the tools, technology, and expertise to explore new frontiers in data analysis, operational efficiency, and consumer engagement,’ Esser stated. He added, ‘Working together is not just about technology; it’s about fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and performance across our organization.’
The initial focus of this partnership includes developing an AI-enabled supply chain. This will involve predictive forecasting, real-time operational adjustments, and streamlined logistics and manufacturing processes to elevate efficiency and potentially reduce environmental impact. Danone also plans to implement digital twinning of core skills to support data-driven decision-making within its procurement, production, and distribution teams.
Beyond the supply chain, AI is already being utilized in Danone’s Research & Innovation (R&I) domains, including consumer insights, in silico modeling, and new horizons in gut health. A Danone spokesperson highlighted an ongoing productivity and effectiveness use case where Generative AI is integrating procurement data points across various commercial and procurement platforms. This generates more comprehensive insights into contracts, vendor performance, and spending, further enhancing logistics. In manufacturing, AI will be deployed for preventative maintenance of production lines and advanced performance analytics, with generative AI chatbots facilitating communication with operational data.
