Daikin Applied Acquires DDC Solutions, Bolstering AI Data Center Cooling Capabilities

OSAKA, Japan – Daikin Industries, Ltd., a global leader in air conditioning, has made a significant strategic move into the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) data center market with the definitive agreement to acquire Dynamic Data Centers Solutions, Inc. (DDC Solutions). The acquisition, conducted through Daikin’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Daikin Applied Americas Inc. (DAA), is set to finalize by late August 2025, pending regulatory approvals under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976.

DDC Solutions, based in San Diego, California, is renowned for its cutting-edge cooling systems specifically designed for AI data centers. The company’s portfolio includes patented S-Series v4 cabinet technology, capable of supporting up to 100 kW air cooling and ready for liquid-to-chip cooling exceeding 1MW per cabinet. Furthermore, DDC Solutions offers a proprietary equipment management system that provides real-time analysis and automatic control of fluctuating power consumption and heat generation at the rack level, crucial for energy efficiency in high-density computing environments.

This acquisition marks Daikin’s substantial entry into the AI data center solutions field, aiming to expand its data center-focused portfolio with advanced in-room and rack-level cooling solutions. The demand for high-performance data centers is accelerating, driven by the rapid advancements in digital technology and the increasing adoption of AI. Data centers are evolving from mere ‘data storage and processing’ facilities to vital infrastructure for AI ‘learning and inference,’ necessitating more efficient and robust cooling solutions.

Yu Nishiwaki, Chief Operating Officer for Daikin Applied, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, ‘The demand for high-performance data centers is accelerating and the equipment inside those data centers is evolving rapidly. This acquisition allows us to deliver a rack-level cooling platform that is resilient, flexible and scalable, and able to support current and next-generation chip sets.’ Keith Markley, Chief Executive Officer of DDC Solutions, also noted that joining Daikin Applied will enhance the company’s ability to meet growing global demand for data center cooling solutions.

Major IT companies are actively constructing dedicated AI data centers, particularly in suburban areas. As AI integration expands across various operations and services, there is an anticipated trend towards establishing general-purpose inferencing AI data centers in urban areas, which will further escalate the demand for efficient cooling systems in confined spaces. DDC Solutions’ unique technology directly addresses the challenges associated with increased electricity consumption and heat generation from growing data processing demands.

Financially, Daikin Applied, a subsidiary of a $36.6 billion market cap industrial giant, demonstrates strong positioning for such strategic moves, having reported an impressive 8.12% revenue growth over the last twelve months, generating $31.7 billion in revenue. The company also boasts a healthy current ratio of 1.85 and substantial EBITDA of $4.3 billion. Following the acquisition, DDC Solutions will operate as a subsidiary of Daikin Applied, with its current leadership team remaining in their roles, ensuring continuity and leveraging their specialized expertise.
