Cultivating Uniquely Human Capacities: A Strategy for Students in the Age of Generative AI

This rapid transformation has already begun to impact higher education, with a majority of students reportedly using AI for homework and finding it more beneficial than traditional tutors. This paradigm shift has led to widespread uncertainty among students regarding their career paths and among professors concerning their lesson plans.

The core message of the report is that capabilities that cannot be authentically replicated by AI, due to their inherent connection to the human body, will become paramount. These UHCs include intuition, ethics, compassion, and storytelling. The author, Brett Whysel, a lecturer in finance and decision-making at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY, advocates for a strategic reallocation of time and resources in education. This means shifting focus away from AI-replaceable technical skills, such as basic coding and routine data analysis, and towards the development of UHCs and proficient AI skills.

Employers are increasingly adopting AI, and concurrently, expectations for AI-savvy job candidates are on the rise. This trend is causing anxiety among college students, with 51% re-evaluating their career choices and 39% expressing concern about AI replacing their jobs, as per Cengage Group’s 2024 Graduate Employability Report. An OpenAI representative, when asked by a student about pursuing web design, advised focusing less on the ‘nuts and bolts of coding’ and more on ‘interpreting and translating client goals into design plans’—a clear endorsement of UHCs.

AI’s capabilities are advancing rapidly, with frontier models now incorporating ‘deep research’ and ‘reasoning’ abilities, leading to more comprehensive and thoughtful results. The development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), where AI can perform at human levels across most economically valuable cognitive tasks, is anticipated by some experts as early as 2030. This progression means that hard skills like basic coding, data analysis, administrative tasks, and routine bookkeeping are among the first to be automated.

To ‘future-proof’ careers, students are urged to prioritize skills such as mindfulness, empathy, ethical judgment, critical thinking, intuition, aesthetic sense, computational thinking, collaboration, and leadership. The article emphasizes the importance of authentic and ethical AI use to augment these UHCs, rather than replacing them. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ list of eight career readiness competencies largely aligns with UHCs, with ‘technology’ being the exception, underscoring the need for effective AI integration.

Mindfulness is presented as a foundational practice for developing UHCs, fostering self-knowledge, goal setting, and creativity.
