AI-Driven Job Growth Outpaces Workforce Skills, New Reports Highlight Tech Market Shifts

The global job market is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with new reports revealing a substantial surge in AI-related roles. However, this growth is accompanied by a persistent skills gap, challenging employers to adapt their workforce strategies.

Job postings requiring AI skills have seen an explosive increase, with some reports indicating a 94% rise year-over-year and a staggering 400% increase in job listings mentioning ‘AI’ in the U.S. market. AI-specific skills, such as generative AI modeling and AI data annotation, have grown by up to 220% annually, according to Upwork’s 2025 In-Demand Skills report. PwC’s ‘2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer’ further highlights this acceleration, noting that skills for AI-exposed jobs are changing 66% faster than for other jobs—more than 2.5 times faster than the previous year.

Despite concerns about AI-driven job displacement, current data suggests a more nuanced impact. A survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that only 1% of service firms reported job cuts directly attributable to AI, and no surveyed manufacturers reduced their workforce due to AI use. Instead, many companies are opting to retrain their existing employees to meet the evolving demands of an AI-powered economy. Richard Deetsz, an economic policy adviser at the New York Fed, emphasized this shift, stating that ‘instead of layoffs many firms are retraining their existing employees reflecting a shift in hiring practices.’ While 12% of service firms hired fewer people because of AI, 11% are actively seeking workers skilled in AI technologies.

However, the landscape is not without its complexities. Generative AI adoption has been linked to over 10,000 job cuts in 2025, primarily within tech firms and administrative roles. The rapid pace of AI innovation also poses challenges for freelancers, with generative AI tools reducing contract volumes by 2% and earnings by 5% in AI-exposed occupations. Furthermore, a significant ‘maturity gap’ exists in AI deployment, as 92% of companies plan to increase AI investments, but only 1% consider their AI strategies fully mature.

Industries that are more exposed to AI are experiencing substantial benefits, including a 3x higher growth in revenue per employee. Wages are also rising twice as quickly in these AI-intensive sectors, indicating that AI is making workers more valuable. AI is permeating virtually every sector, from healthcare and manufacturing to education, streamlining diagnostics, automating administrative tasks, and creating demand for new roles like clinical data analysts and AI ethicists.

Small businesses, while increasingly adopting AI tools, face their own set of challenges. Many are struggling with limited time for marketing activities, and confidence in marketing outcomes has declined despite increased investments. Economic pressures, including rising costs and tariffs, are also impacting operational strategies, making upgrades to AI-enabled personal computers more challenging.
