TLDR: Ciena Corporation has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Nubis Communications for $270 million in an all-cash deal. This acquisition aims to significantly expand Ciena’s data center portfolio with high-performance optical and electrical interconnects specifically designed for AI workloads, adding over 50 engineers to its R&D team and enhancing its capabilities in scalable, high-performance connectivity for AI-driven demand.
Ciena Corporation (NYSE: CIEN), a global leader in high-speed connectivity, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Nubis Communications, a privately held company based in New Providence, New Jersey. The all-cash transaction, valued at $270 million, is set to close during Ciena’s fiscal fourth quarter of 2025, pending customary closing conditions and approvals from both companies’ boards of directors and Nubis shareholders.
This strategic acquisition is a significant move by Ciena to address the escalating demand for scalable, high-performance connectivity within data centers, a need largely propelled by the explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI) related traffic. Nubis Communications specializes in developing ultra-compact, low-power optical and electrical interconnects that are specifically engineered to support demanding AI workloads.
David Rothenstein, Chief Strategy Officer at Ciena, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating, “The acquisition of Nubis represents a significant step forward in Ciena’s strategy to address the rapidly growing demand for scalable, high-performance connectivity inside the data center, driven by the explosive growth of AI-related traffic.” He further added that by owning these key technologies, Ciena is “expanding our competitive advantage by advancing development of differentiated solutions, reducing development costs, and driving long-term efficiency and profitability.”
Nubis’s portfolio brings two critical technologies to Ciena: Co-packaged/near packaged optics (CPO/NPO) and Electrical Active Copper Cables (ACC). The CPO/NPO modules are high-density optical solutions capable of delivering up to 6.4 Tb/s full-duplex bandwidth, optimized for low-latency and low-power performance. The Electrical ACC technology, utilizing advanced analog electronics, supports high-speed data transmission at up to 200 Gb/s per lane over distances of four meters. This solution offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative for connecting AI accelerators between racks, overcoming the limitations of traditional copper or DSP-based solutions.
Beyond technology, the acquisition will also integrate over 50 talented engineers from Nubis into Ciena’s R&D team, bolstering Ciena’s expertise in data center interconnects. Dan Harding, CEO of Nubis, expressed enthusiasm about the merger: “The Nubis team is thrilled to join Ciena and enhance its industry-leading portfolio with our breakthrough interconnect technologies. Together, we will advance Ciena’s data center strategy by delivering reliable, high-quality, and high-performance interconnect solutions to support the next generation of AI workloads.”
