The California State University (CSU) system has embarked on a groundbreaking public-private initiative to embed artificial intelligence (AI) deeply within its educational framework. This extensive program, believed to be one of the largest and most ambitious efforts in higher education globally, was officially unveiled in February 2025. Its primary goal is to provide equitable access to AI tools and training for all 450,000 students, faculty, and staff across the system’s 23 diverse campuses.
Key to this initiative are partnerships with nearly a dozen leading technology companies, including industry giants like Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Intel, LinkedIn, Amazon Web Services, and Alphabet. These tech partners are not only joining academics on an advisory board to identify crucial AI skills needed in the California workforce but are also committed to offering internships and apprenticeships. This will provide CSU students with invaluable real-world experience in AI-related fields.
CSU Chancellor Mildred García emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “We are proud to announce this innovative, highly collaborative public-private initiative that will position the CSU as a global leader among higher education systems in the impactful, responsible and equitable adoption of artificial intelligence.” She further added that the strategy aims to “elevate our students’ educational experience across all fields of study, empower our faculty’s teaching and research, and help provide the highly educated workforce that will drive California’s future AI-driven economy.”
As part of this broader AI strategy, the CSU launched the ‘Artificial Intelligence Educational Innovations Challenge’ (AIEIC) in April 2025. This challenge invited faculty from all 23 campuses to develop innovative instructional strategies leveraging AI tools. The response was overwhelming, with over 400 proposals submitted by more than 750 faculty members. The Chancellor’s Office committed $3 million to fund 63 winning proposals, selected for their potential to foster transformative teaching methods, groundbreaking research, and address ethical considerations of AI in academia.
One notable example of a funded project comes from Cal State LA, which secured funding for two faculty-led AI projects. These include ‘AI-Enhanced STEM Supplemental Instruction Workshops,’ designed to integrate generative AI tools like ChatGPT into workshops to improve student success in challenging STEM courses by offering personalized, real-time feedback. Another project, ‘Teaching with Integrity in the Age of AI,’ will form a Faculty Learning Community to address concerns about AI and academic integrity, developing ethics-focused pedagogy and assignments aligned with AI literacy standards.

Nathan Evans, CSU deputy vice chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs and chief academic officer, highlighted the faculty’s role: “CSU faculty and staff aren’t just adopting AI—they are reimagining what it means to teach, learn, and prepare students for an AI-infused world.” He underscored the CSU’s commitment to innovation, stating that the findings from these initiatives will be shared systemwide to maximize impact and prepare students to engage with AI strategically, ethically, and successfully in California’s rapidly evolving workforce.
