Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has taken a proactive step in navigating the evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by establishing a new task force dedicated to ensuring its responsible implementation and use across the institution. Announced on October 24, 2025, this initiative underscores TMU’s commitment to embracing AI’s transformative potential while safeguarding academic integrity and core university values.
The university-wide task force on generative AI, formed earlier this year, comprises a diverse group of professors, researchers, and administrators. Their mandate is to develop clear guidelines that foster innovation while ensuring the ethical and responsible application of AI tools within the university’s ecosystem, from classrooms to research laboratories.
Sean Kheraj, Vice-Provost, Academic and co-chair of the task force, emphasized the profound impact of AI on higher education. “AI is disrupting higher education,” Kheraj stated. “TMU is committed to leading in this space. We want our community to have the guidance and tools they need to use these technologies responsibly.”
In conjunction with the task force’s efforts, TMU has launched a new online resource hub, the “AI at TMU website.” This central platform provides the university community with essential information, including key policies, teaching guidelines, and training materials. The website also highlights TMU’s ongoing research initiatives focused on responsible AI development and application.
Mark Robertson, Dean of Libraries and fellow task force co-chair, commented on the dual nature of generative AI. “Generative AI offers exciting opportunities,” Robertson noted, “but it requires careful thinking. The website connects our community with the resources they need to engage with AI thoughtfully.”
