TLDR: The BMW Group has significantly advanced its cloud optimization strategies by integrating a Generative AI (GenAI) powered assistant, CLEAI, into its existing Cloud Efficiency Analytics (CLEA) tool on AWS. This collaboration with AWS Professional Services has enabled the automotive giant to manage its rapidly expanding cloud infrastructure more efficiently, supporting over 5,000 users and accelerating cloud optimization efforts by up to 50%. CLEAI provides actionable insights, identifies cost-saving opportunities, and generates code through natural language, ensuring robust governance and reduced operational costs.
The BMW Group, a leader in automotive innovation, has taken a significant leap in cloud optimization by deploying a Generative AI (GenAI) powered assistant, CLEAI, on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This strategic move addresses the complexities of managing a vast and growing cloud environment, which expanded from 4,500 AWS accounts in 2023 to over 10,000 in 2025.
To ensure optimal cloud usage and cost efficiency, BMW Group’s Financial Operations Center of Excellence (FinOps CoE) had previously developed Cloud Efficiency Analytics (CLEA). This expert tool provided a centralized view of AWS consumption, facilitating informed cost optimization decisions. Building on this foundation, BMW Group partnered with AWS Professional Services to develop CLEAI, a GenAI-powered assistant seamlessly integrated into the CLEA tool.
CLEAI is designed to empower users of all AWS skill levels to enhance the cost optimization of their cloud workflows. Currently, it supports more than five thousand BMW Group users in their cloud optimization efforts, significantly accelerating the analysis and implementation of cloud infrastructure optimization by up to 50%. This efficiency gain is crucial for a company operating at BMW’s scale.
The assistant’s capabilities are extensive: through natural language conversation, CLEAI provides actionable insights, identifies potential cost savings, and generates step-by-step implementation guidance. Crucially, it can also produce underlying code, including CLI commands, Python scripts, and Terraform configurations, all while adhering to BMW Group and AWS best practices.
Jens Kohl, head of offboard architecture at BMW Group, highlighted the importance of customer trust and the benefits reaped from this collaboration. He stated, “Our highest value asset is our customers’ trust. Using AWS, we know our customer data is exactly where it should be and protected at all times.” He further added, “Using Amazon Bedrock, we’ve been able to scale our cloud governance, reduce costs and time to market, and provide a better service for our customers.” The flexibility offered by Amazon Bedrock, allowing the use of various large language models, is a key enabler for CLEAI’s effectiveness.
