TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a preview of Amazon CloudWatch generative AI observability, a new capability designed to provide comprehensive insights into the performance, health, and accuracy of generative AI applications and workloads. This feature offers out-of-the-box views into latency, usage, and errors, along with end-to-end prompt tracing to quickly identify issues within AI components like model invocations, agents, knowledge bases, and tools.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the preview launch of Amazon CloudWatch generative AI observability, a significant enhancement aimed at providing developers and organizations with deeper insights into the operational health and performance of their generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications and workloads. This new capability is designed to address the unique challenges of monitoring complex AI systems, including agents deployed and operated with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore.
The generative AI observability feature offers an out-of-the-box view into critical metrics such as latency, usage, and errors associated with AI workloads. This allows for faster detection and diagnosis of issues within various components, including model invocations and AI agents. A key highlight is the end-to-end prompt tracing functionality, which enables developers to meticulously track the flow of information through components like knowledge bases, tools, and large language models, helping to pinpoint the exact source of problems.
AWS emphasizes the compatibility of this new feature with popular generative AI orchestration frameworks, including Strands Agents, LangChain, and LangGraph. This flexibility ensures that developers can integrate CloudWatch observability seamlessly into their existing AI development workflows, regardless of their chosen framework. By analyzing telemetry data across all components of a generative AI application, CloudWatch can quickly identify the root cause of errors. For instance, it can help determine if inaccurate responses stem from gaps in a VectorDB or incomplete Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) system retrials, leveraging curated metrics and logs.
This connected view of component interactions is crucial for developers aiming to optimize their AI workloads for high levels of availability, accuracy, reliability, and overall quality. Furthermore, the new feature provides a dedicated agent-curated view accessible via the ‘AgentCore’ tab within the CloudWatch console, simplifying the monitoring and assessment of entire fleets of AI agents.
Generative AI observability is fully integrated with existing CloudWatch capabilities, such as Application Signals, Alarms, Dashboards, Sensitive Data Protection, and Logs Insights. This allows users to extend their current observability tools to effectively monitor their generative AI workloads without needing to adopt entirely new systems.

Currently, the generative AI observability feature is available in Preview across four AWS regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt), and Asia Pacific (Sydney). Standard CloudWatch pricing will apply for the collection and storage of telemetry data generated by these new monitoring capabilities.
