TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has rolled out significant enhancements to its AI assistance within Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio. These new capabilities include an agentic chat feature, the Amazon Q Developer Command Line Interface (CLI), and improved Multi-Cloud Platform (MCP) integration, all designed to streamline data engineering and machine learning workflows.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a major upgrade to its Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio, introducing enhanced AI assistance that promises to revolutionize data engineering and machine learning workflows. The new features, launched on September 8, 2025, include an agentic chat experience, the Amazon Q Developer CLI, and robust Multi-Cloud Platform (MCP) integration.
The core of this enhancement is the Amazon Q Developer chat, an agentic AI assistant embedded directly within the SageMaker Unified Studio JupyterLab integrated development environment (IDE). This intelligent assistant is designed to automatically comprehend a user’s entire project context, encompassing data, compute resources, and existing code. By doing so, it delivers highly relevant suggestions and insights, acting as a powerful coding companion. Users can leverage it to answer complex questions about their projects, gain deeper understanding of intricate datasets, generate code, and create notebooks more efficiently. This makes it invaluable for tasks such as building ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines, developing machine learning models, and crafting generative AI applications.
Further extending its reach, Amazon Q Developer is now also available in the command line within both JupyterLab and Code Editor IDEs. This provides developers with flexible access to generative AI assistance across their preferred development environments.
A key aspect of this release is the improved MCP integration. For configuring additional MCP servers, users can navigate to the Amazon Q Developer chat and select the ‘Configure MCP servers’ tools icon. Alternatively, configuration files can be directly edited at /home/sagemaker-user/.aws/amazonq/agents/default.json for the chat interface or /home/sagemaker-user/.aws/amazonq/mcp.json for the Amazon Q Developer CLI. The process involves selecting the ‘+’ symbol to add a new MCP server and then choosing ‘Save’.
Vipin Mohan, a Principal Product Manager at Amazon Web Services, who leads generative AI product strategy, emphasizes the significance of these advancements. He specializes in building AI/ML products, container platforms, and search technologies that serve thousands of customers, underscoring the strategic importance of these new tools for AWS’s clientele.
