AWS and Code.org Expand AI Literacy Initiatives, Aiming to Empower Millions Globally

TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Code.org are significantly expanding their collaboration to advance AI literacy and skills globally, targeting millions of individuals through various programs and substantial investments. This initiative aims to bridge the AI talent gap and prepare a future workforce for the evolving technological landscape.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Code.org are at the forefront of a major global push to democratize Artificial Intelligence (AI) education, with initiatives designed to equip millions with essential AI skills. While a specific launch on August 18, 2025, for ‘one million’ individuals was initially noted, broader efforts by AWS and its partners, including Code.org, indicate a comprehensive, multi-faceted strategy already underway and extending through 2025.

In November 2023, Amazon unveiled its ambitious ‘AI Ready’ commitment, pledging to provide free AI skills training to two million people worldwide by 2025. A cornerstone of this initiative is a new collaboration with Code.org, focusing on introducing students to generative AI through engaging programs like ‘Hour of Code Dance Party: AI Edition.’ This hour-long introduction allows students to develop virtual music videos while learning the fundamentals of generative AI and large language models. Beyond this, AWS is investing over $12 million in Udacity scholarships, providing access to generative AI courses for more than 50,000 high school and university students from underserved and underrepresented communities globally.

Further solidifying its commitment, AWS announced the ‘AWS Education Equity Initiative’ in December 2024, committing up to $100 million in cloud technology and technical resources over five years. This fund is designed to help dedicated learning organizations, including non-profits and edtech companies, build or scale innovative digital learning solutions. Code.org, already a long-standing partner, is set to expand its use of Amazon Bedrock under this initiative to provide automated assessment of student projects, thereby freeing up educators’ time for more personalized instruction. Another notable partner, Rocket Learning in India, will leverage Amazon Q in QuickSight to enhance learning outcomes for over three million children.

Recent developments in July 2025 also highlight AWS’s continuous efforts, with the launch of two new programs specifically for college students and recent graduates. These programs aim to equip them with critical AI skills and literacy through free, hands-on, and gamified training. One such immersive learning experience, the ‘LLM League,’ challenges teams to solve real business problems and build AI solutions, with AWS providing up to $2 million in AWS credits to support participants’ learning. Michelle Vaz, Managing Director of AWS Training and Certification, emphasized the transformative impact of AI on entry-level roles, stating, ‘This is an opportunity for early-career professionals to leapfrog the traditional path where they historically had to spend a majority of their time on repetitive and time-consuming tasks, and instead, contribute at a strategic, leadership level from day one.’

These initiatives underscore the urgent need for AI-skilled talent. A study by AWS and Access Partnership revealed that while 73% of employers prioritize hiring AI-skilled talent, three out of four struggle to meet their needs. The study also indicated that workers with AI skills could earn up to 47% more in salaries, and 93% of businesses anticipate using AI solutions across their organizations within the next five years. By removing cost as a barrier and offering a wide array of free and low-cost courses, AWS and its partners are actively working to bridge this critical skills gap and foster a globally AI-ready workforce.
