ASML Secures Largest Stake in Mistral AI, Propelling European Tech Sovereignty

TLDR: Dutch semiconductor giant ASML has become the largest shareholder in French AI startup Mistral AI, investing €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) in a €1.7 billion Series C funding round. This investment values Mistral AI at €10 billion ($11.7 billion), making it Europe’s most valuable AI company. The strategic move aims to bolster European technological independence in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.

In a significant development for the European technology landscape, ASML, the Netherlands-based leading supplier of advanced chipmaking equipment, has announced its acquisition of the largest shareholder position in French artificial intelligence startup, Mistral AI. The strategic investment, totaling €1.3 billion (approximately $1.5 billion), was part of Mistral AI’s recent Series C funding round, which collectively raised €1.7 billion (around $2 billion). This substantial capital injection elevates Mistral AI’s valuation to an impressive €10 billion ($11.7 billion), solidifying its status as Europe’s most valuable AI company.

The move, reported on September 7-8, 2025, is widely seen as a critical step towards strengthening European technological sovereignty and fostering indigenous AI competitiveness. With the generative AI sector largely dominated by American and Chinese powerhouses like OpenAI and Google’s Alphabet, this collaboration between two European tech heavyweights is interpreted as a concerted effort to build an independent European ecosystem and reduce reliance on external AI technologies.

ASML, often dubbed the “super supplier” in the semiconductor industry, holds a near-monopoly on the production of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment, which is indispensable for manufacturing the most advanced computer chips. The company itself leverages artificial intelligence internally to enhance the efficiency and precision of its tools. By partnering with Mistral AI, ASML is poised to harness advanced AI models and data analytical capabilities to further revolutionize its product offerings and semiconductor fabrication processes.

Mistral AI, founded in 2023 by former employees of Google DeepMind and Meta’s Paris research laboratories, has rapidly ascended in the AI space. The startup had previously secured €600 million in investment from prominent entities such as Samsung and NVIDIA in June of the previous year, at which point it was valued at approximately $6 billion. ASML’s latest investment is expected to grant it a seat on Mistral AI’s board of directors, potentially influencing the strategic direction of this promising European AI venture.
