TLDR: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced its acquisition of ZT Systems, a leading provider of AI and cloud computing systems, for approximately $4.9 billion. This strategic move aims to significantly bolster AMD’s capabilities in AI infrastructure and intensify its competition with Nvidia in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has made a significant strategic move in the competitive artificial intelligence landscape, announcing its intent to acquire ZT Systems, a prominent designer and manufacturer of AI and cloud computing systems for hyperscale data centers, for approximately $4.9 billion. This acquisition is poised to be a cornerstone of AMD’s long-term AI strategy, directly challenging Nvidia’s dominance in the burgeoning AI chip and data center markets.
AMD CEO Lisa Su emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating, “Our acquisition of ZT Systems is the next major step in our long-term AI strategy to deliver leadership training and inferencing solutions that can be rapidly deployed at scale across cloud and enterprise customers.” The deal will enable AMD to transition from primarily a chip provider to a comprehensive solutions provider, integrating ZT Systems’ expertise in data center design and system-level solutions with AMD’s cutting-edge silicon and software capabilities.
ZT Systems CEO Frank Zhang expressed enthusiasm for the merger, noting, “We are excited to join AMD and together play an even larger role designing the AI infrastructure that is defining the future of computing.” Following the completion of the acquisition, Zhang will lead AMD’s manufacturing business, while ZT President Doug Huang will head the design and customer enablement teams.
This move comes as AMD continues to heavily invest in its AI ecosystem. The company has funneled over $1 billion into expanding its AI ecosystem and strengthening its AI software capabilities over the past 12 months, in addition to its ongoing research and development investments. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2025 and could begin contributing to AMD’s profits by the end of next year. AMD’s stock saw a positive reaction, rising 2% in pre-market trading following the announcement.
