Geological Survey of India to Integrate AI for Advanced Landslide Forecasting

TLDR: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is actively developing a more robust landslide forecasting model and expert system by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI). GSI Director General Asit Saha announced the institution’s goal to operationalize a nationwide Regional Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) by 2030. The GSI also plans to commence issuing operational landslide early warning bulletins for the Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand soon.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is embarking on a significant research initiative to enhance its capabilities in landslide prediction by integrating artificial intelligence (AI). GSI Director General Asit Saha recently confirmed that the organization is developing a more robust landslide forecasting model and an expert system powered by AI. This strategic move was highlighted during a workshop held to commemorate the first anniversary of the National Landslide Forecasting Centre (NLFC).

According to Director General Saha, a key long-term objective for the GSI is to establish and operationalize a nationwide Regional Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) by the year 2030. This ambitious target underscores the GSI’s commitment to mitigating the risks associated with landslides across the country.

In an immediate step towards this goal, the GSI is set to begin issuing operational landslide early warning bulletins specifically for the Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand. This initiative aims to provide timely alerts to residents and authorities in a region particularly vulnerable to such natural disasters.

Saha also lauded the achievements of the NLFC team, noting their success in expanding landslide early warning coverage. Since its inception, the NLFC has broadened its reach from 16 districts across six states to 21 districts spanning eight states in 2025. Furthermore, the NLFC has made pioneering efforts in incorporating global best practices into its forecasting systems. Significant upgrades have been implemented for the NLFC dashboard, the Bhusanket portal, and the Bhooskhalan App, all designed to improve real-time monitoring and enhance public access to crucial landslide forecasts.
