In a significant move to address the burgeoning energy requirements of its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and data centers, Amazon has announced investments totaling over $500 million in advanced nuclear energy solutions. This strategic pivot positions Amazon alongside other tech giants like Microsoft and Google, all of whom are increasingly turning to atomic energy to power their energy-intensive AI development and cloud services.
The core of Amazon’s strategy revolves around Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which are touted for their compact design, flexibility, and quicker construction times compared to traditional nuclear power plants. These innovative reactors can be deployed closer to data centers and communities, ensuring a stable, low-carbon energy supply while bolstering regional energy resilience.
Amazon has inked several key agreements to advance its nuclear ambitions:
Energy Northwest (Washington State): The company is collaborating with Energy Northwest to develop four advanced SMRs at the Columbia Generating Station in Washington state. This project is projected to generate up to 960 megawatts (MW) of power by the early 2030s, feeding directly into the grid to support Amazon’s energy needs.
X-energy (Funding Round): Amazon led a $500 million funding round in X-energy, a prominent SMR developer. This investment, part of a broader $2 billion corporate venture, aims to support the deployment of more than five gigawatts (GW) of new nuclear energy projects by 2039. X-energy’s Xe-100 fourth-generation advanced SMRs, which can produce 80 MWe each and be deployed in “four-pack” configurations for 320 MWe total, are central to this initiative.
Dominion Energy (Virginia): Amazon is exploring a 300 MW SMR project with Dominion Energy near Virginia’s North Anna nuclear power station, with vendor selection anticipated in 2025. Northern Virginia is a critical hub for data centers, experiencing unprecedented growth in electricity demand.
Talen Energy (Pennsylvania): Through a partnership with Talen Energy, Amazon is co-locating a new data center campus adjacent to the Susquehanna nuclear facility in Pennsylvania. This long-term energy supply agreement secures 1,920 MW of carbon-free electricity until 2042, directly supporting AWS data centers and their expanding AI infrastructure. The deal also includes plans to explore further SMR development and nuclear capacity expansion within Talen’s operations.
Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services, emphasized the importance of this shift, stating, “One of the fastest ways to address climate change is by transitioning our society to carbon-free energy sources, and nuclear energy is both carbon-free and able to scale — which is why it’s an important area of investment for Amazon.” Kara Hurst, Amazon’s CSO, added, “AI can enable both and we’re using it in ways big and small to make progress. This is just the beginning and I’m excited about all the ways AI can help us reach our goals.”
The push for nuclear energy is a direct response to the massive computational needs of AI, which require continuous, 24/7 power that traditional intermittent renewables like solar and wind cannot consistently provide. Goldman Sachs estimates that data center power demand will grow by 160 percent by 2030, with AI accounting for approximately 19 percent of this demand by 2028.
