AI-Generated Receipts: A Growing Threat to Corporate Expense Management

TLDR: A recent survey by Medius indicates that the advent of advanced AI models like GPT-5.0 is significantly escalating the risk of AI-generated expense fraud for businesses. The findings reveal that nearly a third of finance professionals are unable to identify fraudulent expense reports, with many already witnessing an increase in faked claims since the introduction of GPT 4.0. The report underscores critical inefficiencies and compliance challenges within existing expense management systems, advocating for the adoption of intelligent anomaly detection technologies to counter increasingly sophisticated AI-powered deception.

The launch of advanced generative AI models, such as GPT-5.0, is sparking fresh concerns among finance teams globally, as businesses face an escalating threat from AI-driven expense fraud. A new survey conducted by spend management leader Medius, involving 1,000 finance professionals across the US and UK, reveals a mounting crisis in detecting increasingly sophisticated fraudulent claims.

According to the Medius AI Expense Fraud survey, a staggering 32% of respondents admitted they would not be able to recognize a fake expense report if it landed on their desk. This vulnerability is compounded by the fact that 30% of finance professionals have already reported a rise in faked receipts since early 2024, following the release of GPT 4.0. Experts fear that GPT-5.0, with its promise of enhanced realism and precision, will only exacerbate this challenge, making AI-generated fraudulent claims even harder to detect and easier to produce.

Gary Hall, Chief Product Officer at Medius, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We’re at a tipping point. GPT-5.0 promises even more realism, more precision and more ease for the user. That’s great for innovation, but it’s also a gift to fraudsters. When AI-generated documents are indistinguishable from the real thing, legacy finance systems simply can’t cope. This is no longer a niche IT issue – it’s a frontline finance challenge.”

The survey also shed light on existing issues within expense management processes. A significant 42% of finance professionals have suspected a colleague of submitting a fake or altered receipt, and over one-third (34%) admitted to feeling pressured to approve expenses that appeared illegitimate. The report cited alarming examples of questionable expenses that have been approved, including claims for a diamond ring, a luxury car, fees for a Japanese school, and even expenses for a strip club.

Despite 92% of finance professionals believing their company’s expense policies are clearly communicated, two-thirds (66%) feel that most employees do not adhere to them closely. This figure jumps to 78% in sectors like manufacturing and utilities, highlighting a deep-seated cultural and operational problem. The inefficiency of current systems is also a major pain point, with 45% citing chasing receipts, 44% experiencing approval delays, and 40% struggling with manual data entry. Detecting fraud remains a significant challenge for 33% of respondents, and 29% confessed to bending the rules themselves, such as rounding up figures or reclassifying personal costs as business expenses.

Hall further warned, “The stories we’re hearing make it clear that expense abuse isn’t just hypothetical. Combine that with AI-powered fakes, and businesses are heading straight into a compliance crisis. Finance teams need intelligent anomaly detection systems, not manual guesswork, to stay ahead of what’s coming.”
