TLDR: Alibaba’s Qwen Team has introduced Qwen3-Max-Preview, a new flagship large language model (LLM) boasting over a trillion parameters. This model offers ultra-long context handling, competitive benchmark performance against leading AI models, and is accessible via various platforms, marking a strategic move by Alibaba in the evolving LLM landscape.
Alibaba AI has officially unveiled its latest flagship large language model, Qwen3-Max-Preview (Instruct), a groundbreaking model that surpasses one trillion parameters, making it the largest and most advanced LLM developed by Alibaba to date. This significant release is accessible through Qwen Chat, Alibaba Cloud API, OpenRouter, and is integrated as a default tool in Hugging Face’s AnyCoder, broadening its reach to developers and enterprises.
Qwen3-Max-Preview is engineered for ultra-long context handling, supporting an impressive context window of up to 262,144 tokens (258,048 input, 32,768 output). To enhance efficiency during multi-turn sessions, the model incorporates context caching, ensuring super fast speed and quality in its operations.
In terms of performance, Qwen3-Max-Preview demonstrates strong competitive capabilities against some of the industry’s leading models. Benchmarks indicate that it outperforms Qwen3-235B-A22B-2507 and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with models like Claude Opus 4, Kimi K2, and Deepseek-V3.1 across a diverse range of assessments, including SuperGPQA, AIME25, LiveCodeBench v6, Arena-Hard v2, and LiveBench. Early results also suggest emergent structured reasoning capabilities on complex tasks, despite not being explicitly marketed as a reasoning model.
This launch comes at a pivotal time when the artificial intelligence industry has seen a trend towards developing smaller, more efficient models. Alibaba’s decision to scale upwards in parameter count with Qwen3-Max signifies a deliberate strategic choice, underscoring the company’s robust technical capabilities and its unwavering commitment to trillion-parameter research.
For users accessing the model via Alibaba Cloud, a tiered token-based pricing structure is in place. For 0–32K tokens, the cost is $0.861 per million input tokens and $3.441 per million output tokens. This scales up for longer contexts, with 32K–128K tokens priced at $1.434/million input and $5.735/million output, and 128K–252K tokens at $2.151/million input and $8.602/million output. While cost-efficient for smaller tasks, the pricing scales significantly for extensive long-context workloads.

Unlike some of Alibaba’s earlier Qwen releases, Qwen3-Max-Preview is not open-weight, adopting a closed-source approach with access restricted to APIs and partner platforms. This strategic shift highlights Alibaba’s commercialization focus, which may influence its broader adoption within research and open-source communities.
