TLDR: Alibaba International has launched Accio Agent, an AI-powered tool designed to streamline cross-border trade for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This initiative comes as Alibaba reports a significant surge in AI-driven revenue, demonstrating resilience despite ongoing tariff-related uncertainties, particularly in the US.
Alibaba International is making significant strides in the global e-commerce landscape with the introduction of its innovative AI tool, Accio Agent. Launched on August 18, 2025, Accio Agent is touted as the world’s first AI platform specifically tailored for business-to-business (B2B) transactions, aiming to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by dramatically simplifying and accelerating cross-border trade processes.
The AI agent is designed to act as a comprehensive virtual specialist, capable of performing market research, planning products, designing prototypes, checking regulatory compliance, and identifying distributors. This integrated approach automates approximately 70 percent of tasks that traditionally require a team of specialists, reducing the time needed for these operations from weeks to mere minutes. According to Kuo Zhang, Vice President of Alibaba International, this launch is a direct response to the challenges SMEs face in a competitive global market. Zhang stated, “This is an AI agent designed to act as a sourcing manager, product developer, engineer, and market researcher all at once,” highlighting its role as a practical solution for everyday hurdles in international trade.
Accio Agent is equipped with an extensive database, leveraging insights from one billion products and 50 million distributors. This robust data infrastructure enables smaller firms, many of which operate as single-person companies (an Alibaba survey found 40% of SMEs globally fall into this category), to scale their operations efficiently without the need for additional staff.
This strategic move by Alibaba aligns with a broader industry trend of increasing AI adoption in e-commerce. Projections from Coherent estimate that AI-related applications in the sector will experience substantial growth, soaring from $7.7 billion in 2025 to nearly $38 billion by 2032. The global trade market itself is expansive, with UN Trade and Development reporting a record value of $33 trillion in 2024, a market Alibaba is actively seeking to reshape with its technological advancements.

The company’s push into AI-driven solutions comes amidst a complex global trade environment, marked by persistent tariff headwinds, particularly impacting US-China relations. Despite these challenges, Alibaba has demonstrated remarkable resilience. On September 1, 2025, Alibaba’s shares experienced their most significant surge since 2022, following reports of a substantial increase in AI-generated revenue. Analysts note that tariffs have not significantly hampered Alibaba’s overall financial performance, with expectations of further “opening up” in trade policies throughout the year. The company’s core e-commerce business is also showing strong growth post-restructuring, with AI models playing a crucial role in enhancing product recommendations and customer profiling. Furthermore, Alibaba’s overseas revenue has seen a notable increase of 26-27%, partly attributed to strategic investments in regions like Singapore and the expansion of its AI services to other businesses.
