TLDR: A new joint venture, AfricAI, has been established by four international technology firms to spearhead the development of sovereign artificial intelligence solutions tailored for the African continent. The initiative aims to transform Africa from an AI consumer into a self-reliant developer, with an initial focus on Nigeria.
Four prominent global technology companies – Lakeba Group (Australia), Next Digital (Nigeria), AqlanX (UAE), and Agentic Dynamic (Netherlands) – have officially launched AfricAI, a strategic joint venture dedicated to fostering sovereign AI innovation across Africa. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Monday, August 18, 2025, seeks to develop and commercialize enterprise-grade AI solutions built locally for the unique needs of African markets.
The core mission of AfricAI is to empower Africa to transition from being a mere consumer of artificial intelligence to a sovereign developer, ensuring that AI systems are deeply rooted in local languages, regulatory frameworks, and societal requirements. The venture will initially concentrate its efforts on Nigeria, leveraging the nation’s existing data centers and edge infrastructure. This foundational phase will pave the way for the deployment of impactful AI applications across critical sectors, including healthcare, digital identity, document automation, public administration, and various enterprise services.
Looking ahead, AfricAI plans to expand its footprint into Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Rwanda by 2026. The initiative is committed to building a robust local AI ecosystem, which includes establishing a Center of Excellence. This center will be instrumental in training over 100 African AI professionals by 2026, fostering expertise in areas such as cybersecurity, ethical AI deployment, and model tuning.
Key sovereign AI use cases prioritized by AfricAI include the development of multilingual citizen services, supporting languages like Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin. It will also focus on secure digital identity verification, AI-driven document intelligence, and the creation of agentic assistants for human resources, education, policy planning. The venture emphasizes embedding compliance, cybersecurity, and ethical AI frameworks into all its solutions to ensure real-time observability and resilient infrastructure across edge networks.

Leaders from the founding partners expressed strong optimism about AfricAI’s potential. Prince Malik Ado-Ibrahim, Chairman of Next Digital, stated, “AfricAI is not about outsourcing AI to Africa—it’s about building it here, with full control over data, deployment, and decision-making. With AfricAI, Nigeria is setting the pace.” Giuseppe Porcelli, CEO of Lakeba Group, added, “This is about building the AI infrastructure Africa deserves—secure, scalable, and sovereign.” Demetrio Russo, Founder and CEO of AqlanX, highlighted the importance of localization: “Localization, multilingual compliance, and digital trust are core to our AI philosophy. AfricAI reflects a strategic intent by AqlanX to help shape Africa’s digital sovereignty agenda while enabling secure, AI-first innovation ecosystems built for scale, ethics, and inclusion.” Eren Sivasli, Chairman of Agentic Dynamic, underscored the focus on scalable automation, noting, “We believe in scalable, domain-specific automation that truly supports human workflows. That’s why we’re excited to bring Agentic Dynamic’s segment-oriented agent architecture into this multinational collaboration.” This landmark initiative marks a significant step towards a self-reliant and inclusive digital future for Africa within the global AI landscape.
