Adobe’s $3 Billion Bid for AI Video Leader Synthesia Collapses Over Valuation

TLDR: Adobe’s reported $3 billion offer to acquire Synthesia, a prominent AI video generation startup, has fallen through due to disagreements over valuation. This attempted acquisition underscores Adobe’s strategic focus on integrating generative AI capabilities across its creative software suite and the burgeoning market for AI-powered video content.

In a significant development that could have reshaped the landscape of creative software, Adobe recently explored the acquisition of London-based AI video startup Synthesia for an estimated $3 billion. However, the deal ultimately collapsed due to unresolved valuation disagreements, leaving industry observers to speculate on the implications for both companies and the broader AI video sector. The news was initially reported by The Information and subsequently cited by various outlets, including IndianWeb2.com, Sifted, GuruFocus, and Veritas News.

Synthesia, a leader in generative AI, specializes in creating lifelike video avatars from text, eliminating the need for cameras or actors. Its core technology is highly valued for applications such as corporate training, marketing, and scalable multilingual content creation. The platform boasts a strong enterprise appeal, with over 70% of Fortune 100 companies reportedly utilizing its services for fast, professional-grade video production.

Adobe’s interest in Synthesia aligns with its aggressive strategy to integrate generative AI across its product ecosystem, exemplified by its Firefly image generation tools. The acquisition would have significantly expanded Adobe’s Creative Cloud offerings with AI-native video capabilities, fostering synergy with its ambitions in e-learning and marketing automation.

Despite Adobe’s substantial offer, which reportedly exceeded Synthesia’s January 2025 valuation of $2.1 billion, the final terms could not be agreed upon. This impasse occurred even after Adobe Ventures made a strategic investment in Synthesia in April 2025, a period when Synthesia announced it had surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR).

Beyond Adobe, other tech giants have also shown interest in Synthesia’s innovative technology. Notably, Meta held early discussions with the AI video firm, indicating a broader industry recognition of the potential of avatar-based video creation.

Synthesia’s platform allows users to create personal AI avatars, either in specialized studios or directly from their devices. The company recently partnered with Shutterstock to license its video footage for training AI models, aiming to enhance the realism and expressiveness of its AI-generated avatars.

While Synthesia primarily focuses on corporate AI avatars and explicitly prohibits their use for political or news purposes, the company has faced challenges regarding content moderation. In 2023, it was revealed that the Venezuelan government had used Synthesia’s technology to create fake, AI-generated television presenters to disseminate disinformation, highlighting the complexities of managing AI misuse.

This attempted acquisition follows Adobe’s unsuccessful $20 billion bid for collaborative design platform Figma in 2023, which was thwarted by antitrust concerns from EU and UK regulators. Adobe continues to expand its venture portfolio with investments in other startups like Captions and VidMob, signaling its ongoing commitment to innovation in the creative technology space.
