TLDR: Instagram has rolled out new generative AI features for Stories, allowing users to transform photos and videos with text prompts. These tools enable users to add, remove, or change objects, apply artistic styles, and even restyle text, making AI-powered creative editing more accessible directly within the app.
Instagram, a Meta Platforms subsidiary, has significantly upgraded its Stories feature by integrating advanced generative artificial intelligence tools. Announced on October 23, 2025, these new capabilities empower users to creatively modify their visual content through simple text prompts, moving AI editing from behind the Meta AI chatbot directly into the Stories creation experience.
Key among the new functionalities is the ability to ‘restyle’ images and videos. Users can now input text commands to perform various edits, such as removing unwanted objects from a photo’s background, altering a person’s attire, or completely transforming the visual style of an image. For instance, a user could prompt Meta AI to ‘change the background to make it look like the cat is in space’ to achieve dramatic effects.
Beyond custom prompts, Instagram is offering a suite of preset style options. These include applying artistic filters like ‘watercolor’ or ‘anime,’ adding accessories such as sunglasses or motorcycle jackets, and incorporating dynamic effects like ‘snowfall’ or ‘fire scenes’ into short videos.
Text restyling is another innovative addition, allowing users to move beyond standard font choices. Through AI-generated text, users can apply unique styles, such as ‘chrome’ or ‘balloon,’ or even create custom text appearances with prompts like ‘make it look like toy blocks.’
To encourage sharing and creative collaboration, Instagram has introduced an ‘Add Yours’ sticker. If a user is particularly proud of an AI-restyled photo, they can add this sticker, enabling friends to apply the same edits to their own stories. A ‘Presets browser’ icon has also been added to the bottom right of the Stories composer, providing an easy way to explore available styles.
This update marks a strategic move by Meta to make its generative AI features more prominent and accessible to Instagram’s vast user base. Previously, similar AI capabilities were confined to interactions with the Meta AI assistant. By integrating these tools directly into Stories, Meta aims to enhance user creativity and engagement, intensifying the ‘AI creative tool war’ against competitors like TikTok and Snapchat.
Users should be aware that utilizing these AI editing features implies agreement to Meta’s AI service terms, meaning the company may analyze uploaded images and facial features to refine its generative models. This continuous data feedback loop is expected to further improve Meta’s AI capabilities.
