Adobe Launches “The Unfinished Film” Initiative, Empowering Creators with Generative AI Video Tools

TLDR: Adobe has launched “The Unfinished Film,” a collaborative project inviting creators worldwide to complete a film using their generative AI tools, particularly Adobe Firefly. This initiative aims to showcase the power of AI in enhancing creativity and democratizing filmmaking, with director Sam Finn leading the project.

Adobe is demonstrating significant confidence in its generative AI video capabilities by launching “The Unfinished Film,” a global collaborative project inviting artists, designers, filmmakers, and storytellers to complete a film using Adobe’s AI-powered tools. This initiative, announced on July 31, 2025, emphasizes that AI serves as a creative amplifier rather than a replacement for human ingenuity. The project is spearheaded by director Sam Finn, a recognized pioneer in the intersection of AI and storytelling. Finn stated, “It used to take years of learning—and a lot of money—to make a film. Now anyone with a vision can start. I’m excited to see what creators from non-traditional backgrounds will make when those barriers fall away. That’s what The Unfinished Film is about: opening the door for new voices and unexpected perspectives.”

The core of this initiative lies in Adobe’s creative AI tools, particularly Adobe Firefly, which is designed to spark ideas, accelerate workflows, and enable complex creative concepts. Firefly allows users to generate images and videos, leveraging the same technology found in popular Adobe products like Photoshop, Premiere, and Lightroom. Creators can reimagine scenes, alter tones, or reshape narratives rapidly using the Adobe Firefly app. The tools support AI-generated video, audio, and effects, along with Firefly Boards for mood boarding and ideation, catering to collaborative and iterative creative processes.

“The Unfinished Film” is a social campaign built on the message that “Creativity is better when it’s shared.” Participants are encouraged to take an unfinished film and transform it into their own masterpiece. The project highlights how Adobe’s AI tools, such as Generative Extend in Premiere Pro, can instantly add extra frames to video and audio clips, supporting 4K and vertical video. Other AI advancements in Premiere Pro include Media Intelligence for quickly finding relevant clips and Caption Translation, which localizes captions in 27 languages, streamlining post-production workflows. While some beta features like Generative Extend have faced initial user challenges, Adobe continues to refine its offerings, with the Firefly Video model also in limited public beta.

Adobe’s commitment to empowering creators extends beyond this project. The company announced an additional $5 million investment in the Adobe Film and TV Fund in January 2025, aimed at supporting underrepresented creators and filmmakers. This fund, along with partnerships like the Group Effort Initiative (GEI), provides mentorship, training, and career programs. Adobe’s tools are already widely adopted in the industry, with nearly 85% of films at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival utilizing Adobe Creative Cloud products, and Premiere Pro being the most popular video editing software, used by over 60% of the films.
