TLDR: Adobe has rolled out powerful new AI tools in its 2025 Photoshop update, including Generative Upscale for improving low-resolution images, Harmonize for seamless object blending, and an enhanced object removal tool. These features, powered by Adobe’s Firefly AI models, aim to streamline workflows and boost visual accuracy for creators.
Adobe is significantly enhancing its flagship image editing software, Photoshop, with a suite of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools as part of its 2025 update. Announced on July 29, 2025, these new capabilities are designed to empower photographers, designers, and content creators by automating time-consuming tasks and improving overall visual quality. The key additions, powered by Adobe’s proprietary Firefly AI models, include Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and a re-engineered object removal tool.
One of the most anticipated features is Generative Upscale, which utilizes AI to dramatically improve the resolution of low-quality or older photographs. This tool can boost images up to 8 megapixels, restoring fine details and enhancing clarity, making it invaluable for preparing images for print or digital platforms without sacrificing quality. According to Adobe, this feature has been one of the most requested by the Photoshop user community. It is currently available in beta for Photoshop desktop and web versions, with options to scale images by 2x, 3x, or 4x.
The Harmonize tool is set to revolutionize composite image creation. When a new object is introduced into an image, Harmonize intelligently analyzes the surrounding context and automatically adjusts the object’s color, lighting, shadows, and visual tone to ensure a seamless blend. This significantly reduces the need for manual adjustments, streamlining the workflow for complex compositions. Harmonize is available across Photoshop for desktop, web, and mobile devices, with an early access program for iOS users.
Furthermore, Adobe has improved the existing Remove tool, now leveraging the latest Adobe Firefly Image Model. This enhancement allows for more precise erasure of unwanted objects, filling the vacated space with realistic content and resulting in fewer artifacts for a cleaner, more natural end product. The improved Remove tool is also available for desktop and web.
Shambhavi Kadam, Senior Director of Product Management for Photoshop, emphasized Adobe’s commitment to understanding user needs, stating, “We have spoken with thousands of designers, photographers, and creative professionals to understand what slows them down. These features target the friction points and help automate time-consuming tasks.”

These AI-powered editing tools underscore Adobe’s strategy to maintain Photoshop’s leading position in the digital design landscape by enhancing creativity rather than replacing it. The company anticipates that these faster, smarter tools will enable creators to focus more on high-level storytelling and design thinking.
