TLDR: Accion has successfully closed its $61.6 million Second Accion Venture Lab Fund, now rebranded as Accion Ventures. This fund is dedicated to investing in early-stage fintech companies worldwide that aim to serve financially underserved populations, leveraging innovative technologies including Generative AI, embedded finance, and alternative data.
Accion, a global nonprofit committed to financial inclusion, has announced the final close of its Second Accion Venture Lab Fund, securing $61.6 million. The fund, which has now rebranded its early-stage fintech strategy to Accion Ventures, will focus on investing in innovative early-stage fintech companies globally that are dedicated to meeting the financial needs of underserved individuals. This initiative builds upon a decade-long investment strategy that prioritizes both social impact and financial returns through venture capital investments.
The $61.6 million fund garnered commitments from a diverse group of investors, including commercial and impact asset managers, development finance institutions, foundations, family offices, and strategic financial service companies. Notable limited partners include the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank FMO, Proparco, ImpactAssets, Ford Foundation, MetLife Asset Management, and Mastercard Worldwide.
Accion Ventures has already made initial investments through the new fund in several promising companies: PaidHR in Nigeria, Foyer in the United States, FinFra in Indonesia, and Flowcart in Kenya. The team behind Accion Ventures brings a deep understanding of local customers and markets, combined with global insights, to support investments across Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the United States.
The strategic importance of this fund is underscored by the significant global financial inclusion gap. According to the Global Findex 2025, approximately 1.6 billion people worldwide still lack an account with a financial institution or have an inactive one. Furthermore, a staggering $5.7 trillion annual financing gap exists for micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, presenting a substantial market opportunity for disruptive startups in the fintech sector.
Accion Ventures aims to identify and scale companies that are at the forefront of emerging fintech trends. These include leveraging embedded finance, alternative data, and advanced technologies such as Generative AI (Gen AI) to deliver financial solutions. The fund also looks at innovations like satellite imagery to enhance financial services.
A spokesperson for Accion emphasized the fund’s mission, stating, “This fund seeks to support the growth of early-stage, disruptive companies providing high-quality, affordable financial services that can help reduce poverty and create opportunity for millions of people globally.”
