The decision to establish a physical presence in India comes as the country has rapidly emerged as OpenAI’s second-largest user base for ChatGPT, demonstrating a significant appetite for AI solutions and a burgeoning developer community. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had previously highlighted India’s relevance in August, stating, “AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch—ChatGPT users grew 4x in the past year—and we are excited to invest much more in India!” He further emphasized the commitment by saying, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”
The new New Delhi office is central to OpenAI’s broader strategy to reinforce its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets. The company plans to build a dedicated local team that will work closely with the Indian government, developers, businesses, and academic institutions. This collaboration aims to develop India-focused AI initiatives and ensure that advanced AI tools are more accessible across the nation. As part of these efforts, OpenAI recently introduced a budget-friendly ChatGPT Go plan in India, priced at ₹399 (approximately $4.60) per month, designed to cater to the country’s large, price-sensitive user base and enable more students and professionals to access advanced AI capabilities.
OpenAI has also committed support to the federal government’s USD 1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, an initiative focused on developing large and small language models tailored to regional needs.
